This picture helps confirm that a single front axle configuration should be fine! Oshkosh apparently made this 6x6 HEMTT prototype in the early eighties. I doubt that they used a heavier axle, then the one used in the M916-M920 series trucks!
Also the "Baby HEMTT" I believe, is built on a 2 1/2...
That is a very good question! luckily the original cab on the M916 is a "TANK" and weighs almost a third more then the Mk48 cab. Also the stock hood and fenders weigh a ton, so by going aluminum, I'm going to save some weight there. The good news is that the M916 has a 20,000# front axle rating...
A HEMTT cab would work for the build, but you can't beat the brand new Mk48 cabs! They make it feel and smell like a brand new truck! I got mine off of Ebay....Barstow sold like fifty of them not to long ago, so there are several available. Some members here on SS also mentioned that they had...
Steering
Got a break in the weather and was able to finish the steering setup. I'm very happy because when I turned the steering wheel to the right....
THE WHEELS ACTUALLY TURNED TO THE RIGHT!!!!! :jumpin:
When designing this setup, I made sure that none of the components can come undone in...
Ok...now you really got me impressed.....how did you take the "picture" of your own phone screen?!?!?! I can't make my "smart-phone" do that....I tried but was afraid I would brake it in half.... Maybe I'll stick to "messing" with trucks....
Yes mine says that to, but Clarence Jungwirth @ Oshkosh looked up the real DoM by the frame numbers. He said that the military (Airforce) bought most of them in 1945! Then they got re-powered and overhauled multiple times.
When they re-powered them, Oshkosh gave them a new manufacturing date...
If you can supply the M931 and the Mk48 cab, we can certainly talk..... I would really like to do that combo, I think it would make a great truck!
Just figured out an other small difference between an LVS and a HEMTT cab. This sounds really goofy, but the headlights are about 2" farther apart on the LVS than they are on the HEMTT!!!! Now why would Oshkosh do that?!?!
Any suggestions anyone? "Wreckerman" maybe? ;)
Nice! Even with a picture of the design....that is pretty much what I had in mind....and thanks for the drawing!
So I worked until 22:30 hours the night before last on finishing the main supports for the top cross bar on the front bumper. Then we got hit by another snow storm and so there...
Thanks for the nice compliments! I will have to implement some kind of headlight protection as you mentioned. I would like to have it removable though, that way I can change bulbs without having to remove the whole top of the bumper.... :)
I had a good weekend, the weather held up and the temps were in the low forties. I also got unexpected help from my good friend Branko, who came down to help me for the weekend!
So all this caused me to make some nice progress on the FEMTT. (And yes...the "F" stands for "FAST" compared to a...
