Found some bad Glow Plugs today

I know there's been several discussions in the past on testing the GPs and there's one person's version in the wiki, but maybe you could give a step by step refresher of your method. Thanks!

    Helpp

Sounds like a Transfer case issue rather than a tranny problem at this point. The t-cases on CUCVs are almost as bad as the ones on our HMMWVs. They take a strange combination of gentle finesse and brute force to get into place. Try moving the shifter from P to N and then working the transfer...

    Oil change Problem!

I might have done this as teenager. I just let the plug fall into the drain pan, and then the oil covered it up and I forgot about it. Went to drink a coke while it drained. Came back, put the new filter on, and then I started filling it. My dad comes over yelling "STOP!" *whoops!*...

Midwest winter vs. M1009: the cold won

Okay- so it warmed up to 19*F now, on my lunch break. Got in, and let it cranked for 10 seconds . It was struggling, but wouldn't quite catch, but it was SO close. Waited 1 min. Tried again. She coughed, sputtered some nasty gray smoke, huge billows of white, and roared into glorious diesel...

    Oil change Problem!

    1. Not to be insulting, but are you sure you are checking the oil dipstick and not the tranny one? The oil one is on the driver side of the engine. The tranny stick is on the top rear of the psgr side. (I only say this because a friend of mine new to this truck made the same mistake with a...

Midwest winter vs. M1009: the cold won

I do let it run for more than just the commute- I normally fire it up around 0700 and do let it run until the idle kicks down and warm it up for a good 15 minutes. Then when I get to work I keep it running in the parking lot for a good 5-10 minutes (enough time to smoke my once daily cigarette...

Midwest winter vs. M1009: the cold won

So the subzero midwestern temps finally bested my big steel beast. Glow plugs seem to be working, as the truck started all day yesterday and the day before with temps around 10*F. Admittedly it would take 2-4 tries of letting them cycle, cranking for 10 seconds and then letting the starter...

    m1009 vacuum pump test

The green area in the pic is the vacuum modulator on the psgr side of the IP. The white arrow points to the IP. The red arrows show where there are two 3/8" bolts that hold it onto the IP. You can slightly loosen these (recommend a shorty wrench) and rotate the modulator clockwise or...

    Strong Vibration With Hubs Locked

Three main causes of vibration at speed: Bad U-joints Out of balance/bent drive shafts Tire Balance/Wheel alignment Since you didn't have a problem in 2WD, I'd have to agree with Westy and Recov: Replace your U-joints ($8-20 each at O'Reilly) and have your front drive shaft checked for balance...

I didnt know where else to put this, military pickup question

And unless the thing's been worked over good and restored to show condition don't pay $5k for it. I'd say no more than $2,500 for a reliable runner with minor cosmetic defects. I probably would have paid $5k for Westech's if I had it, but he's a trained pro on these and the thing was a cherry...

I didnt know where else to put this, military pickup question

If you want a strong work truck, go with the M1008 or M1028A2 (dually). The engine is strong enough for what you want, but the gearing on the M1009 is not. It's more of an "errand-runner" if you will, with the GM Corp 10-bolt axles and gears. The others have more pulling power, but you REALLY...

M1009 meets Saab - Guess who won?

Was just going to recommend the same thing. Part is a H6054ST if I remember right. Makes a big difference. Something like $20 per at O'Reilly, Wal-mart, Autozone, etc. No conversion necessary and big difference in light. Glad to hear your daughter is okay. It's hard for the newer tin-foil...

    Great Gas Milage

The fuel economy you report is pretty normal for the M1009s. I get about the same: 15-18 mpg in town, and 18-22 on the highway. This is better than my wife's minivan gets. Despite your pick, I'm still not sure exactly how you changed the setup on your IP/Vac pump modulator. But in a stock...

    lug wrench for M1008

I lug my wench around in the M1009 all the time. She's sitting on the hood in my avatar! rofl As far as a wrench, I just picked one up at the truck stop. The original was the crowbar type, but was rusted to ****. *my wife will not think this post is funny. *

    sticker on my windshield

Where did you get your truck? There are several actual acronyms I can think of, but none seem to fit: OFA- Obstacle Free Area (airfield/aviation term) Overhead Fire Area (artillery) Office of Fiscal/Financial Administration Ohio Forestry Association Office of Federal Activities (EPA) Oregon...

Where to find a glow plug module.

CARNAC- I may be interested in one. You can PM with price/shipping etc. Thinking January time frame to purchase. Thanks.

    Noob Question

The blackout light switch on the CUCV does not lock in place. It will return to center once you flip it up or down. This is normal. I would highly recommend reading the User's Manual: http://old.steelsoldiers.com/index.php?module=pagesetter&type=file&func=get&tid=1&fid=file&pid=6 It covers...

    M1009 Engine Oil

The military Lube Order specifies 15W40. I'm sure there may be better brands out there, but I use Rotella due to its widespread availability at truckstops and convenience stores. I run it all 4 seasons and haven't ever had a need to use anything else. Truck starts reliably at -10 to 100*F.

    Anyone use these glowplugs?

Did a search for this and didn't come up with anything. I know most folks are using Wellman 070s or AC60s. Was surfing around and came across these: Glow Plug - Chevy 6.2L Military CUCV Marketing sounds great, but some firsthand reports would be great if anyone has used these.

Sway Arm Size and rear Transfr seal?

Reviving an old thread here: Am having the same problem. Was getting a bad vibration at highway speeds and on acceleration, then lost the rear u-joint. Replaced it, but while I was messing with the drive shaft, I noticed its slinging tranny fluid on the undercarriage from the back of the...
