There you go. Straight from Tom himself.
If you have any doubt about Tom's commitment to this hobby, I urge you to go and visit his facility, or visit his website and read about this issue.
You've seen the news, and the crowds protesting at the Capitol. That's how it's done. You have to...
Greg,
I'm going off this comment:
What is the MVPA's position? I urge all MVPA members to speak up, and help determine the course of your organization. If it is to support all milveh owners, both collectors and users, then we need some help here.
I know Jeff Rowsam (Catman) is concerned...
Hi again.
As promised, an effort is underway to obtain normal, unrestricted registration for ex-military vehicles which comply with U.S. Safety Standards (FMVSS). Like was posted previously, we got Trans-123 formally withdrawn. Now on to the next step...
To be clear, this does not effect...
Man, you've got that right!!
As these fellows have pointed out, the titling and registration of Motor Vehicles are entirely a state responsibility. Despite the obvious wisdom of having such regulations being consistent throughout the nation (especially so given the states' reciprocity laws)...
You'd think that would constitute a "taking", wouldn't you. Or fraud, since they sold the vehicles to the public on the condition that a person could obtain a title and registration, if they got an SF-97. But it's not likely to go anywhere, unless it goes to court, and then it would likely...
Yes. Oh, Yes!! This has been a pet idea of mine for some time now. That worthless rat-crap DOT attorney, Paul Nilsen is a HUGE bike racer. He's on the the "Brazen Dropouts" bike team, and he thinks he's the flippin' Lone Ranger, when it comes to defending bikers. Read this: [Bikies] Re...
BSH,
The Highway Safety Act of '63 charges DOT with collecting data and making recommendations to improve highway safety. WisDOT doesn't see that as enough. They think they can create the rules as they wish, without having to bother going through the legislative process. Trouble is, they...
Correct.
mbarber84,
4 years ago, Wisconsinites got to license their milvehs (those over 20 yr. old) as "specialty vehicles" with a "pretty blue" plate, and it was only a one-time fee. Back then, if we wanted to, we also had the option to license them as a "truck" and haul stuff or use it for...
BSH,
Short answer: You're correct. But...
Under the terms of s. 341.266(1)(am), Wis. Stats. (passed in May, 2010), you can use certain milvehs to "work". You must license them as a "special interest" vehicle, instead of the "historic military vehicle", but then you're exempted from a payload...
DLJ,
I got involved when DOT cancelled the title and registration on my Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer, Sept. 25, 2007.
DOT Atty. Nilsen told me that the problem with Pinzgauers began when a guy in Milwaukee approached DMV about a title they'd just issued on which the VIN was wrong. That issue got them...
Vtwin,
I'd suggest that the bs'ing was done mostly by DOT, namely by Atty. Paul Nilsen and Carsen Frazier. From what I can determine, DOT convinced some folks that milvehs were illegal, because of DOT's previous action tossing the Pinzgauers off the road entirely. DOT scared them into...
Bob,
Thanks a lot! Yes, that's the "NHTSA label". THAT'S what this whole stink has been about!!
From what I understand, if a vehicle has a 17-digit VIN, DMV's computer automatically recognizes the vehicle as compliant with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards). If it doesn't have...
Bob,
Thanks for the data. According to DMV employee testimony during my appeal, their computer can only accommodate a 17-digit VIN. Otherwise, the computer throws up red flags etc. I think that's their first clue to differentiate things. But it could also be from an SF97 submission, in the...
Vtwin,
I fully agree that it makes NO sense that all civilian-based milvehs weren't included. All I can say is, you weren't there, I was. I fought like he!! for normal use for all milvehs, and that was how my bill was originally written.
It was not supported by the majority of the milveh...
Bob,
From my discussions with the gentleman concerned, I understood that the Dodge M880's have a NHTSA label, but lack the 17-digit VIN number. What you wrote sounds like the opposite - correct VIN but no label. So I'm confused. Can you verify the number of digits in your VIN for me? (I...
Poof,
From what I've heard, if the vehicle does not have the NHTSA label, DMV is not issuing registration for normal ("auto" or "truck") plates.
In fact, back in '07, WisDOT Sect. Frank Busalacchi defended DMV's refusal to issue title/registration on a 1943 Jeep - built a quarter century...
Thanks Ron. We did our best. Undoubtedly, this ain't over yet.
From what I've heard, there are several milvehs which were previously registered as "light truck" or "farm" which have received renewal notices recently. The DMV, like the Lord, moves in mysterious ways!
Regarding the M880s, I...
lacoda56,
You were effected, whether you knew about it or not. If your M882 was ex-military (duh), DMV would consider your vehicle to be restricted under the laws passed earlier this year. The details have been posted here previously.
What's new, is that M880s are not restricted any more...
Fresh news from Wisconsin's front lines:
Word is out that the Dodge CUCV M-880 pickup trucks can now (again!) be registered in Wisconsin with regular Auto or Truck license plates! And unlike all other ex-military vehicles, if you're applying for regular plates (as opposed to "collector" or...
