Retrieved an '84 M1010 this week. It started right up every time as I ran around town doing errands before the long haul from Augusta, GA to Harrisburg PA. First time I stopped for gas on the ride north, the batteries were too low to turn it over even once. I just got the rapid-fire clicks...
This runs off 24VDC. Plug it into your MV slave connector and weld. You can use flux wire, or hook up gas and MIG weld. It also works as a gun on a welding machine.

Here's a brief update: After discussing options, my daughter decided to approach this build in stages. Stage 0 will be a stock '84 M1010 plus
Doghead relay mod.
New industrial strength batteries.
Rear trailer hitch.
Seat belts for 8 in the rear benches.
Rust-proofing treatment, both...
He mentioned that he has HAM and other items that need power. I presume he wants to isolate them from the starter batteries, so he won't find himself unable to start the vehicle after a long HAM session. I'm looking at doing the same to my M1010, though my "house" bank will likely be 24V so I...
I'd appreciate some advice from those with lots of winching experience. I'm new to winches, and I live in a high-salt area. I was planning to mount heavy duty trailer hitches front and back, with appropriate cabling, and plug the winch in when off-roading. Otherwise, I plan to store it...
Is there a tachometer gauge that would properly display this signal? I'd been reading other threads about mounting a tach on an M1010. I'd been planning to glue magnets to the bottom pulley to get a signal for an ISSPRO R8503, but it sounds like it would be much cleaner to use this signal.
This happens on soon-to-be-my M1010. If anyone has suggestions on figuring this one out, I'd welcome any guidance. I'm new to these vehicles. This will be my first foray into the world of the stock M1010 electrical system. The only mods have been to remove the resistors from the wiper...
We found out that if the toggle switch is left in the "service lights" position when not running it draws about 200 milliamps. The toggle switch needs to be in the"all off" position when parked. This will drain your battery in a couple of days.
I'm getting my logistics organized to go down South and pick up an '84 M1010 with 1,850 original miles. The truck apparently has never seen salt. I would like to keep it rust free, but I don't know how.
I've spent a lot of time reading the archives about how to prevent rust. A lot of what I...
I agree a 200 lb winch is not portable. I was looking at this one, that weighs 80 lbs and pulls 10,000 lbs. 70 lbs is what the Military considers "man portable". I figure mounting the winch on the back can be part of the on-road to off-road transition, along with adjusting the air in the...
Using available materials is its own design challenge. I don't trust my welding skills with a 37" tire on the interstate. That's part of why the "stick" idea appeals to me. It's simple enough that I can build it.
Did you put a fuel tank in the space where the old spare went? I've heard...
Thanks Jeff.
That's a lot to digest. I'd been looking at retail 37" prices and decided other things were more cost effective. After your post, I've been reading up on milsurp 37" tires.
If I understand correctly, the H1 wheels will work fine on the M1010 rear axle, but require 2" steel...
Very nice!
I like your swing-out rack. It's beyond my fabrication capabilities, though. I was focused on how she was going to lift such a heavy wheel, and how to allow the doors to swing all the way open. If I manage to make this happen, I'll post pictures.
Thanks for all the info. I was...
This inspired me. If you use the patient crane to lift, it occurs to me that you could mount a receiver hitch vertically behind the rear towing shackle. Fabricate a ~30" vertical "stick" to insert into that receiver, and mount tire to that stick. Use a standard (locking?) hitch pin to secure...
I found this M1010 gear ratio topic covered in 2 other threads, so I thought I'd add links for those who might find this thread.

My main question now is 37"...
Right. I know there's much more to it than my simple arithmetic. But since the M1009 uses 3.08, I thought 3.54 might be safe. Is that not the case?
Thanks for your patience with my noob questions.
OK guys. I put in an offer on an M1010. Haven't heard back from the owner yet, which induces some anxiety...
While I wait, I was looking into tires. I'm hoping for guidance once again from those with experience off road in these vehicles.
The 6.2 hits it's max torque around 2100 RPM. In...
Thanks guys. You've given me lots of ideas I wouldn't have considered.
Looking for:
Front-to-back access without going outside.
Can cruise comfortably and efficiently at highway speeds.
Excellent off-road capability.
Privacy, security, and space for basic amenities like at least a cassette...
