Thanks. When I recovered without a top alternator, the front battery was pretty much flat. I guess I must have been getting enough voltage from the 24v alternator to feed these. I'm going back to studying the wiring diagrams in the TMs.
I am trying to understand the electrical system on my M1010. If there are folks out there familiar with this system, I'd appreciate some guidance. I'm an MV newbie. I worked as a Master Electrician in the theater, so I have a clue about circuitry, but little automotive expertise.
I am trying...
The -10 tm says 16" is OK, and don't go over 20". Fording 20" or more requires changing oil in everything and a full chassis lube. I read the -20 and -34 TMs looking for details on "post fording" maintenance, but found nothing further. Is there another TM that addresses these things?
The...
A dead alternator kept me from bringing my M1010 to Rausch Creek as planned. Watching the videos, it seems clear that some of the water crossings would have far exceeded the CUCV's 20" fording capability "without kit". That got me curious about the CUCV fording kit. I find no mention of it in...
I went to the local trailer hitch guy with the best reputation, a guy who's been at this for decades. He had access to all the commercial hitch products. I went with his recommendation and he welded one in place.
I use the Curt 48007 Receiver Mount Combination Ball and Pintle Hook. The 2"...
Before I learned that my top alternator was fried, I contacted Sure Power about the appropriate products to use to put separate house and starter banks on my M1010, and to replace the DUVAC. They have a lot of variations on each product, and the on-line documentation seemed thin, so I asked for...
Right. I got lead/acid batteries. I wasn't sure I'd be able to get the M1010 charging system to correctly handle any other battery technology. I'm having enough trouble getting it to handle the lead/acid batteries for which it was designed.
There are alternators and voltage regulators out...
I should mention that I'm having my M1010 alternator work done by a professional mechanic who is very familiar with CUCVs and their electrical systems. I understand this stuff well enough to have a healthy respect for how much damage one can do if you wire up big batteries and alternators...
No. The CUCV power system has 2 batteries wired in series for 24V, plus it draws 12V from between those 2 batteries. So it has both 12 and 24V. When you open the hood, the battery nearer the front is connected to ground and the other battery, so the battery further back has 24v between it's...
I understand that this mod has been working for folks. I'm enough of an engineering geek that I wanted to understand *why*. I may be wrong, but I think I now understand why the DUVAC killed batteries and alternators, why the Plan B Mod works so well, and why it doesn't cause problems. I tried...
I got the answer from an engineer at a major US battery manufacturer. Here is my not-brief-enough summary, for those who might have the same question I had. For the experts out there, if I misunderstood something and there is an error in this post, please let me know and I'll fix it.
Assuming...
I have a question about the plan B mod. Say you do something stupid like leave the headlights on and deplete the front battery. If you jump the truck and start it, you now have 2 alternators pumping out as much as 260 amps (160 from 12V plus 100 from 24V) trying to get the voltage up to 14.5...
Welcome. I just got an M1010. I'm in the same boat, a few weeks ahead of you, perhaps.
Some CUCV experts will tell you no 30-year-old truck will be a reliable daily driver, and to get a new truck if you want something reliable. Especially for bitter cold weather.
They tell me you can run...
I'm with you. DaVinci, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Dr. Emmett Brown -- great minds that brought our civilization to the point where we can struggle to keep the smoke inside the blue box in a CUCV. Pardon me while I go run a slave cable to the clock tower. Maybe that will...
Thanks. I'd found those diagrams. Firefox pointed me to http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?132329-Ste-ice-tm9-4910-571-12-amp-p, which talks about what to expect on those pins. There may be more in the misc TM section. I'm still digesting the above.
I'm trying to understand the circuitry in my M1010, and how to effectively detect and diagnose issues. I see from the wiring diagram that the diagnostic connector contains pins leading to lots of interesting points in the wiring harness.
For each useful pin in the connector, I'd like to...
Made it home. Does any successful recovery ever end in daylight?
The 37" tires on the trailer are too heavy for a young lady to handle alone in the woods. So rather than put 37s on the truck, we'll put 32s on the trailer. That will level things out. Matching paint may happen some day, but...
I drive it much more gently than that, but I have a question. I read that the 6.2L was designed for max RPM of 3600, and in the CUCV it's governed to max at 3600 RPM, which with 4.56 axles and 32" tires yields 75.2MPH. It would probably get less then 10MPG at that speed, but it would be within...
