For what it is worth...
I used classic tube for my Mustang. It took a huge amount of time to fit the new lines. Keep your old ones once they are removed. Set the “close enough” ones from Classic Tube next to them and start tweaking them to match the old OEM ones. That will get them close...
My pickup started bleeding ATF. Got under it and noticed the bolt that held the support rod to the bellhousing was broken, and that my 700r4 case was cracked at the rear output flange. Went to pick-n-pull today to get another 700r4 “K” case. Now I need to swap all the good stuff out of my...
I don’t think a 12.7:1 full size box ever existed. The 12.7:1 boxes were the smaller 2.75” piston Saginaw boxes used Jeep Grand Cherokees and some f-body cars. The smaller piston and ballscrew won’t swap into the larger 3.125” piston GM full-size Saginaw boxes. Also the housings are different...
It is up to you.
At least with a 14 bolt it is easy to remove the entire pinion assembly. 6 bolts and you are good to go. Just make sure you clean the mating surface and use “right stuff” or RTV. Reuse the shims that came out. You can remove the bolts and with the parking brake set you can...
Interesting rig. Looks like someone swapped 3/4 ton axles under it. 14 bolt /10.5” full float in the rear and a 10 bolt in the front. This would be the exact axle combo out of a GMC K2500 from the mid 1980’s.
The steering box brace is an excellent idea.
Something else I will toss out there...
Changed the fluid in the transfer case, swapped rear driveshafts so I can get my better one balanced, replaced transfer case mounts and secured some transmission cooler hoses a little better. Winter is here so I need to get my snow ride ready.
I know there is a lot of opinions out there about recentering HMMWV wheels to get cheap double beadlocks with backspacing that works on most applications.
So about 2.5 years ago I recentered a set of 12 bolt wheels to run on my rig. I wanted about 4.75” backspacing so flat centers were the...
I know this thread is older than dirt, but I did some measuring today.
The hub where the wheel mounts is right at 4 19/32" minus a few thousandths.
The HMMWV wheels I had around varied quite a bit, with the 24 bolt wheels being right at 4.800" ish... pilot hole.
I'm going to go with some...
From Eaton Detroit.......
Vehicle PerformanceThe performance of a vehicle equipped with a NoSPIN/Detroit Locker differential is somewhat different from that of a vehicle equipped with a conventional differential. For example:
When turning a corner, the sound of component disengagement and...
That is normal in my opinion for a 14 bolt with a Detroit locker. Also a clunk going from forward to reverse is normal. What you are seeing isn’t backlash in the ring and pinion.
Personally before I tear it apart I would measure the force in inch pounds required to turn the pinion with everything together and note it. Then tear it down, replace the seal and reinstall tightening the pinion nut until the force needed to turn the pinion with everything together is a few...
Personally I only use an impact to break stuff. One of two things happen with an impact, it breaks free or it breaks in half.
I measure preload before and after with an inch pound wrench.
Anybody with a shackle flip come up with anything creative they want to share for a low profile tailpipe? I can’t go back with the pipe making an immediate 90 degree bend behind the rear wheels since the leaf spring is in the way.
I’ve been rocking a sawzalled rusty exhaust system for a couple...
I know others have allready suggested this, but you really need to load test those batteries.. Just because a battery has good voltage at the terminals with no load does not mean it is good. Good voltage and good current are two different animals. A load test with a battery load tester is...
There WILL be fluid in the adapter cavity, and it comes from the transmission. At least it is pretty easy to remove and install a transfer case on one of these with a buddy or a transmission jack.
So there is no seal on the output shaft of the transmission. The ATF from the transmission goes into the cavity in the adapter. If the gasket surface from the adapter to the transfer case or the adapter to the transmission is leaking it will be ATF from the transmission. A little oil can make...
