Why not M998s at GL auctions????

I'd bet they can do better selling them in bulk to other countries. At the very least, it'd be easier to sell, say, 50 at a time than 50 to individual sellers. That said, I think that American bidders should have the right to bid for them, even if required to buy 50 at a time like other...

Why not M998s at GL auctions????

It wouldn't be too hard, particularly for anything pre-airbags (1989?). Lighting could be accomplished via generic stuff at any auto parts store (like the $3 trailer license plate light I have on my truck to make it legal) or junkyard parts, the only tricky issue would be airbag installations...

Why not M998s at GL auctions????

A vehicle only needs to meet the standards for the year of manufacture. M35s are WAY before anything resembling a tough standard came into play. Even my M1008 has no airbag, no emissions system, etc., because the applicable standards weren't in place until the 1990s. So, an M998 from, say...

Why not M998s at GL auctions????

Yup, and it's unfortunate. Sigh, just falls into a long series of gripes I have with the gubmint. ;)

Why not M998s at GL auctions????

I can appreciate the fact that they need every one that they got and they're rebuilding them and such, but that's a different argument from the "they're too dangerous" crappola that the government trots out. Sorry, but my tax dollars paid for (or, rather, pay the interest on the national debt...

Tire selection for my 1008 with an 8" lift

I'll be putting a 700R4 in my M1008. Lower first for more pulling power, plus an overdrive for better cruising. Readily available and durable.

Why not M998s at GL auctions????

Re: RE: Re: RE: Why not M998s at GL auctions???? Really? Couldn't they just sell them "for off-road use only?" I mean, you can buy and title, say, a 4-wheeler, John Deere Gator, and a plethora of other vehicles, or hold the title to a race car that isn't close to street legal- you just can't...

Addtl. Pics of M998's at TNJ Murray's (Summer 2007)

RE: Addtl. Pics of M998 Thank heavens I'm not working in Dover any more. I'd spend WAAAAYYYYYY too much money there...

    Gear ratio for M1008.

Yeah, but they also wouldn't be that much taller than stock, and therefore wouldn't be all that helpful for me. The 700R4, on the other hand, will give me BETTER low end pulling and an actual overdrive- hard to beat that for my needs.

    Gear ratio for M1008.

I guess I just use my truck in a more atypical manner. I guess I could throw on 33" tires, but I doubt I'd notice much of a difference, because they're only about an inch and a half taller than stock. I don't know if they'd allow for enough suspension movement for me to be happy. While I'm sure...

    Gear ratio for M1008.

You could change the gears, but it'd slow down the truck and really hurt it's pulling power. The TH400 has a really high first gear (2.48) and it really needs the lower gears for any sort of torque to the wheels. And yes, you'd have to change the front and rear gears, or forget about using 4WD...

    alts not charging

It was still cranking after you released the key? Sounds like the starter relay is sticking, like it was on my buddy's M1009. Are you sure the alternators are hooked up right?

    alts not charging

I was chatting with the local specialty shop that rebuilds alternators, starters, etc., sells batteries and inverters, that sort of thing. Anyway, they said the guts are the same as the civilian alternator, the only difference is the isolated ground, so they just order the rebuild parts for the...

my 1st m1008- started, now no start. ALso rust question

Can you take a photo of which body parts you need replaced? They're all available cheaply through a variety of sources, I think my buddy pretty much built half his '67 Chevy out of the JC Whitney catalog. Glow plugs would be my bet on the no start issue, as you have fuel.

Arctic Kits- how do they work and how can I fake one?

Thanks for the photos, got any more? I read through the manual briefly and it will certainly help. There are guys in the classifieds selling Swingfire heaters (not sure what they are) and the M151 kits- think I could make either of those work? The Espar units seem kind of pricey.

Arctic Kits- how do they work and how can I fake one?

So the actual kits are rarer than hens' teeth, that's well established. So, can you guys help me understand how they work so that I can make my own? I figure it doesn't really have to even be diesel powered, I got no problem running gasoline and/or propane for it. I also see that there are some...

Come on up here and let's take over the canal for a day.

So what's supposed to happen when I turn the key on?

Yeah, I saw that he had one and that's why I brought it up. I'd like more info so that even if I can't locate a "real" one, maybe I can fake one somehow.

So what's supposed to happen when I turn the key on?

Talking about the Arctic Kit, sorry for the incorrect terminology, I'm still trying to learn. I think it'd be a nice addition, since I don't have any way to run electric to a block heater.

So what's supposed to happen when I turn the key on?

Also, on the subject of the personnel heater, is it the same one as for the Deuce and whatnot or is it unique to the CUCVs and/or any other vehicles? I'm going to start hunting for one, can you share any pics of the installation, or even the final product? Thanks!
