Check out some salvage yards. Years ago I got a large boom just for the price of scrap. It just needed a little welding repair and I had a great boom for years.
It's my understanding that the hydraulic head on the pump is not rebuildable. I hope it's not true. Anyway your problem is probably the hydraulic head. You can find a take off at a fair price and replace yours, but follow the manual.
I use my duece for work in rough off road jobsites. It's a lifesaver. From experience it does better off road than a mack dump truck. As for needing a CDL. I would check your states laws. In Florida if it's a commercial truck you are required to have a CDL and signs on the doors.
If you havent turned the engine over or moved the gears in the Head you may be able to put the old one back in and then line up the timing marks before removing it again.
