For you experienced winch operators, what is the average amount of cable used?
With more than 250 ft available on the drum, it seems like a lot is never used and only serves to decrease the pulling capacity and increase the chances of shearing a pin.
Is anybody running, say 100 ft on the drum...
In the clevis/shackle world, the pin diameter appears to be a measure of its capacity, so accordingly, I'm trying to determine the actual rating of the cable socket/chain/hook assy on both the deuce and the 5-ton winches.
The chain/hook on the 5-ton winch is only rated 12,000 lb or so and the...
Received a "5-ton" winch snatch block today, purchased from a fellow SS member, thanks Ted, it's a beaut! NSN 3940-00-105-9933.
Its rating is 4 ton lift and 10 ton winching and it makes me question the rating of the chain and hook, standard for the winch. It is obvious that it is not designed...
Is there a reference somewhere to look up info based on the contract number on the data plate?
For example, how many units were shipped under a specific contract (DAAE06-68-C-0003)?
Thanks.
How is a 5th wheel rated, vertical loading and horizontal (pull)? What does, say a 45,000 lb rating actually refer to? How does the rear bogie capacity fit into the equation? Same 5th wheel assy is used on deuces and 5-tonners, for example.
Thanks.
I have been looking at a level winder for my front mounted 8x8 winch and found this, which is the rear winch for an M756 pipeline truck. It is also a 5-tonner winch (20,000 lb capacity), but it appears to be installed upside down like mine.
The level winder is different from the ones I have...
For the purpose of maximizing the braking power of an exhaust brake, it's important to know the maximum back pressure permitted on the exhaust valve springs before they open.
I have been using 35 psi as a "safe" value. Called Hercules engine co and they don't have a clue, so here are the spec...
With warmer weather, the motivation returns and I spent some time yesterday on the headlight alignment on the xm757.
It is actually easier to see the "hot spots" of the lights in daylight than in the dark...
I have been looking for ways to clean up the fuel to the multifuel engine and ran into this image, an M1 Abrams with a fuel "polishing" system. Can anybody elaborate on this?
Thanks.
PS. I'm suspecting that dirty fuel from old fuel tanks is causing some of our FDC and IP problems...
Chris Stansbury, please keep the old steelsoldiers site intact (even if locked) with all images and PS Magazines for reference, it's lightweight, powerful, bright, fun to visit and userfriendly.
The real technology advance is in data download rates, images pop up in seconds, no need for silly...
Wanted to check the calibration of the fuel gauge and removed the sending unit.
Found something very interesting, the FLOAT SINKS!!!
I measured the buoyancy of the float and its less than required to float it in diesel or biodiesel.
An older sending unit only needed 15 grams to to register, the...
Does anybody have a chart or picture that represents examples of the different smoke numbers? For example, what does "smoke number 1" look like in real life?
(It's an air pollution thing)
TIA
According to the TM, the slip joint is to be installed "forward" when mounting the drive shafts. After a casual search (google also), nothing pops up to explain this, so why is it important?
I assume "forward" means towards the front of the vehicle and may have something to do with exposure of...
After reading the thread by Russ and his drive shaft "incident", I started to look at the xm757 and it uses self locking bolts as shown in the images below.
My question is, what part or feature of the bolt makes it "self locking"? It screws easily all the way in and uses apparently ordinary...
