    Goodyear MV/T tire pickup

My son Adrian returned from California a couple of days ago and we took a day off to pick up the six 395/85r20 tires at Daniels. The 450 mile roundtrip resulted in six Goodyear Unisteel MV/T tires for possible use on the 8x8. They are "85" not "80" as advertised, so they are a bit taller than I...

Loading the 5th wheel for traction

Short of using the wrecker attachment, has anyone any suggestions for adding weight to the rear when driving a tractor off-road? The lack of weight when bobtailing will produce a lot of wheel spin and little traction....stressing the drive train with the front end engaged, I might add....

    Cranetruck tire mounting

Well, got started anyway, couldn't get the bead over the "safety bump" (see other threads listed below), but the crane made the first stages of the mounting procedure relatively simple. I used the "tire slick" soap and it seemed to help, but evaporated quickly in the sun. Here are related...

    Finished back-up light installation

Got a backup light from Austin Weber the other day and finished the installation yesterday. The 12 volt bulbs, #1073 and #93 were replaced with #1683 and #1691 respectively. Power is supplied by the #21, service tail light wire. (The license plate is for testing purposes only)

    Cranetruck tire bead breaker

Before looking for beadbreaker tools, I thought it may be worth a try using the hydraulic outriggers on the deuce....it worked like a charm.

    Restoring rusty chains

The original coating is disappearing from these chains and I'm wondering what the board thinks about re-coating/painting chains. Is there a dip or a "converter" that can be used?

    A differential oil pressure gauge...

Installed the differential oil pressure on the 8x8, previously used on the deuce. It displays the pressure drop across the oil filters and oil cooler. To my surprise, it indicated less than 1 (one) psi, I had expected about 5 or so based on the readings from the deuce. Now I'm wondering if the...

    Window regulator lube

Took the inside door panels off yesterday to see if the window action could be made to go a bit smoother. Why aren't the slides and guides glistening from grease? Everything is bone dry and slightly rusty. No mention in the TMs about lubricating this mechanism. Do you guys have any comments...

Saving time airing up and down

Using extra parts from around the basement, put this together. It effectively cuts time in half airing up two tires at a time....

Tire size 14.5R20, what does it mean?

There seem to be some confusion about this tire size, equivalents come up as 365/80R20, 375/75R20, MPT 80 and MPT 70E to name some. Some are 38.5 inches in dia with 3 plies and others are 10 ply. Some fit on 8 inch wheels others on 12 inch. Are they available as military surplus and if so...

    Operator's TM size large

Received the second volume of the FMTV operator's manual the other day, thanks aboonski! They must have one heck of a glove box on those trucks, compare the -10 for the xm757, about the same as for the deuce. :-)

    Fuel filter subs

Just a heads up on this subject, the original secondary and final fuel filters for the multifuel engine (11610298) are rated 5 microns. The WIX/NAPA 3512 is only 10 microns..... Considering the possibility of rust particles in a 40 year old fuel tank and metal to metal seals in the IP and FDC...

    Tire repair

Does anyone have experience with the tire repair procedure shown in the TM 9-2610-200-14? A couple of the tires on the 8x8 have cuts that may be repairable, they do hold air, but it would be nice if the cuts could be "healed".

    Tire repair kit

The xm757 8x8 runs on tubeless tires and punctures can be repaired in the field, so to speak. The BII includes this kit, NSN 2640-00-045-1602. It is a little different from the usual plugging tools in that it uses a ""rivet gun" with cartridges, can anyone explain that tool? If you run into...

    Fitting a "freeze plug" question

What is the proper clearance for a freeze plug or cap in this case, before wacking it with a hammer? I need a solid fit and the cap will be drilled and tapped for a vent after installation. The 2-1/16 cap is too large, so I'll have to grind it down to fit. The next smaller size cap that I can...

Spark plug socket for 4A084 engine?

Want to check my spark pugs and realize that I have nothing that will fit, what do I need to buy, deep, thin walled 7/8" socket? Can't tell the size could be 15/16....it's bigger than the standard 13/16... Thanks.

Aviation grade engine oil for genset?

Opinions, pls, found this: " Automotive oil should never be used in an airplane engine. The most important reason not to use automotive oil in an aircraft engine is the number of additives in it that are designed for use in water-cooled engines operating within a certain range of...

Wire rope right lay vs left lay

After reading some terrific posts in the fleet angle and winching ops threads, I'm hoping for more (working on my masters in winching :-)). Any comments on how the cable is wound on the drum based on right or left "lay"?

    Fleet angle vs level wind

Some of my questions may be obvious to the experienced winch operator, but I'm only trying get a little educated before messing with the 8x8 winch. Most likely, I'll be working it alone, so... The way I understand it is that the great majority of front mounted winches do not have a level wind...
