Baradium: Pickup date moved to May 18th. We'll likely spend the summer in Alaska and plan to stay in Fairbanks as long as needed. My sister-in-law just graduated from MTSU. We've used their RV park.
BKubu: We were full-time RVers for ten years. Sold our previous motorhome last summer. This...
We phoned the GP inspector who checked the truck. He said press once, do not hold then went into detail as to why he thought replacing the front driveshaft would solve the problem. I didn't ask who typed the listing.
I really appreciated the GP rep taking time to answer our many questions...
Coachgeo: We'll take it to a shop in Fairbanks to get it looked over and change the fluids and filters. I'd sure like to hear the history on this truck. Not just the driveshaft story but why does it only have 1359 miles? And how in the world could it have cost Uncle Sam $230,363? That's WAY more...
Suprman: I found a SS sticky note saying don’t start insurance threads so I won’t. I don’t want to upset the moderator but, if allowed, this might save someone several hours of research and calling:
RV insurance was our first choice since it will be converted to a rather plush overlanding...
UPDATE: We talked to the GP inspector in Alaska (very nice guy, BTW). He said the "mode" button does not have to be held down, just pressed once. He thinks the truck is in good shape and will probably be fine once the front driveshaft is reinstalled.
We are having tremendous grief getting...
We talked to the GP inspector (a super nice, helpful guy). He said the truck is in great shape and probably just needs the front drive shaft reinstalled. We're flying in so won't have many tools. We want to change filters and fluids so will take it to a local shop.
Thanks for the offer snotrac...
snowtrac nome: I called Pacific Power Products in Fairbanks (thanks for info). They don't have the keypad in stock but have two on order. It's $1077. The guy in Anchorage would be great except that's pretty far. I'm looking into a used keypad. Found one with a short warranty.
Lionel: Thanks...
Wouldn't the 2000 LMTV M1079A1 have an Allison transmission MD3070PT? (Model number from MTV manual dated September 1998.)
I don't know how hard it might be to get a keypad quickly in Fairbanks, AK. Might take one up there just in case? A local (TN) parts guy says there's more than one part...

Just bought our first military vehicle. Looks like it's been sitting a while. Anyone available around May 12 to help us look over it?

Just bought our first military vehicle, a 2000 M1079A1 LMTV 4x4 Van Truck. GP says "The mode button must be continuously depressed for the drivetrain to operate in forward only" and "front driveshaft has been removed."
Any troubleshooting advice would be greatly appreciated. It's located in...
Thanks for the invitation TNriverjet. Would be nice if we could get together after we (husband & wife) buy a truck. We will have some questions, for sure. I envy the agility of your M1078 but we plan to build a full-time RV/overlanding/expedition vehicle so I think the M1083 will be easier.
According to the page below, the FMTV A1 R (2004-2008) has air conditioning:
http://dtic.mil/ndia/2009tacticalwheeled/sessioniiigrein.pdf
However, I just looked at a previously sold 2007 M1088 on GP and did not see an AC. Maybe it was optional?
(I tried to edit my previous post about AC and...
Shopping for a FMTV, preferably a M1083. Newer seems better but I want to avoid ULSD. A1 with ABS would work but A1R with air conditioner sounds better yet. Of course, newer means more expensive but any thoughts on an “optimum” year?
Nice forum, BTW. I've found all sorts of good info here on SS.
