Don't forget the parking brake. Mine was frozen at the pivot points and the cable stuck. I drove about 100yds from where it was parked and thought something was on fire.
Thats what I would do. Cut it short and find a socket a little smaller and tap or beat on it till it makes the unhardened part conform to the socket. The tapping and or beating should help loosen it up.

Great work! I have looked through books and magazines at book stores that show projects like this and it has always amazed me that modelers can take drawings of mechanical machines and vehicles and build working replicas.
