I installed the battery, and test ran the generator. 27 degrees F here and it fired right up with a little heat.
I'll ask tomorrow about shipping.
What I've read and was told is that when you add the acid, the battery will heat up, as with charging. You want to minimize the heat by charging...
I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a surplus store chain about my new (to me, at least) MEP-016B, and I mentioned the unique battery...long story short, he said they had a bunch and we went to look at them.
He said he has about 40 (plus or minus...he sometimes does that) NOS 24 volt 4HN...
recently won one out of Devil's Lake, ND. I did the search thing and the look through the manual thing...what is (or could be expected) fuel consumption of the gen set?
Pick up is on Monday.
If you look in the -34 for the 002a (which is for 60hz and looks like it does not cover the 400hz model) it has diagrams for both the 72-5020 and the 72-5338. If you look at the components, they appear to be mostly the same...just maybe a beefier version/update. Might be possible that the 24P...
I have a 002a, and I do what DieselBob does, but only one element. I have a short cord and the element in mounted on a brace that I can set on top of a filled 5 gallon bucket. Works great if supervised and was Cheap.
Ichudov is correct.
in resistive loads, like heating elements, use V=I*R. The resistance stays the same, so if the voltage drops, the current will drop as well. Reduce the voltage by 10% you get roughly a 20% drop in used power (wattage)
Inductive are the opposite...sort of...reduce the...
I was wondering if anyone in the area would mind doing an inspection for me.
Should be fairly easy, sometime in the next week or so.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, and may be worth a dinner at pick-up.
Thanks!!
Chris
Plugs replaced today, starts much easier now. Was able to replace the plugs without taking anything else apart. Probably the hardest part was getting my hand in to reconnect the electrical terminals...didn't want to run down to the basement to get a needlenose.
I was wondering if anyone new a source for new glow plugs for the MEP's I did a search here and found a 2006 posting that said that Champion CH42 plugs are correct, but Champion's website says that they are discontinued without a replacement. Any ideas? I'd rather get new ones from a commercial...
Has anyone added a heater to their generator? I live in Minnesota, and as my gen set is not happy about starting at 15 degrees, I don't want to try it at -15. It seems that larger commercial sets use coolant heaters to keep the engine warm for easier starting. I know the MEP-002 and 3a don't...
I just finished stringing 10 - 50 LED light sets, and I hooked up a Kil-o-Watt meter to the string...24 watts. I would also do the inverter deal. Much easier and safer than cutting up light sets.
First time EUC. For a MEP-002a
Yay!
Submission of EUC Pending 09/09/2010
EUC revisions requested from Customer 09/14/2010
EUC sent to Battle Creek 09/15/2010

I wanted to pick the brains of the more season folks (unlike myself) here. I am waiting on a 002a and I was wondering what the requirements for automatic starting would be. I might have a relatively low cost solution, but wanted to get the sequence down. This is what I have so far:
sense power...
I'm waiting on a EUC for a MEP-002a, and the little GL window in the upper left corner popped this up:
6115 - Generator and Generator Sets, Electrical at Government Liquidation
Auction has ended, so hopefully I'm not in the wrong...
this new generator does not require a EUC...slipped through...
