I it "always starts and runs perfectly" I would eliminate air in the fuel or lines deteriorating. You would have issues starting the motor due to fuel drain back. Assuming the other two sides of the combustion triangle, air and heat are good then it's a fuel supply problem. I would spend $300...
Got a call Friday from the diesel shop in Memphis and it turns out the plunger was stuck. He suspects that after rebuild the pump sat on the shelf a while allowing the plunger to stick. He also asked if I had turned up the fuel on the pump which I did not. I found that peculiar since after...
Unfortunatly, if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any. But so far the guys up in Memphis who rebuilt the pump have been stand-up. They emailed a shipping label today so I could send it back. He said they would put it on the test stand and see what the deal was.
In the mean time I'm going...
So far so good. I thought the passenger side head gasket was leaking but it turned out to be fuel from an injector that needed re torque. My original problem with my old IP of hard starting is back but at least it's running. Now I need to return the new IP for a refund. I'll get it rebuilt...
It's going to start today, boys!!
I swapped out the IP last night and finished bleeding it this morning. Just putting the batteries on a quick charge now. Hopefully it starts before lunch
I bleed the filter then filled the supply coming off the Filter to IP, then filled the IP...
Mine is working fine but I swapped out the cover with a known good one just to make sure and still no joy. Sorry to hear about your bad luck also. I'll be swapping out the IP next week.
I blew out the return line section by section and it unobstructed. I left the lower flex line off when I cranked and I got fuel dripping out. I also removed the IP cover and exercised the metering valve linkage and its ok.
I guess I could pressure test the supply line from the tank to the IP...
Rick, yup it was a full rebuild. The IP was overhauled by the guys you use, although you've had good luck with yours I'm beginning to think mine is bad from stock. I may change the IP tomorrow with a known good one. Its a lot of work but I'm dead in the water I think.
As far as the timing goes...
I've got good fuel flow from electric pump to filter and out to IP. Along with it being a new IP, the fuel shutoff solenoid was swapped out with a known good one. All the fuel lines are new. I guess that leaves an IP bad from stock.
Sucks.
All my plugs measured between .9 and 1.1 ohms from the contact to the threads.
Ive been turning it over with plugs out and lines cracked since Christmas. I've never gotten fog to come out of the glow plug holes.
Cold start solenoid checks good but I haven't checked the fuel return.
Rich,
It was a complete rebuild. I've got pictures on my other phone of the timing chain sprockets and IP to cam gears being dead nuts. I was also scared to death I would be off on timing so I snapped pics.
The only thing is I don't smell any diesel in the exhaust. I figured I'd smell diesel if...
I rebuilt my 6.2 over the summer and my Dad and I dropped it in Christmas Eve. I've been fighting with it ever since.
It has an electric fuel pump and manual glow plug switch.
This is what I've done so far.
I turned the key to run and opened the bleed valve on top of the filter housing...
You may be able to drive one in but how would you get out of the vehicle? Back in the day we would internal load HMMWV's in Chinooks and crawl out the back. Obviously not an option in an M1008 but you could do it for an M1009 also.
