The rear driveshaft turning creates cavitation in the transfer case. This is bad. There's a reason every good towing company disconnects the rear driveshaft before towing a 4x4 or RWD vehicle from the front.
So just to drag this back up what mpg do you M1009 owners see around town? Speeds no higher than 55mph. I'm starting to think about getting rid of my Tracker for something with more space for the wife and dogs and I on longer trips.
Dabba, check with 84CUCV. I'd bet he might even have a wheel or two. Also ask around on CK5. A member there got me a 16" for my spare for shipping a few years back. Before that another one gave me the same deal on a 16.5" wheel when I was running HMMWV tires.
Either that or check...
Warn used to make a kit to make the 10 bolt rear axle a full floating axle and one of the options was locking hubs. They stopped making it and several of the other non-Jeep specific offerings several years ago. Not enough interest.
The manuals were an option all the way to '91. Just weren't common but apparently ordered enough GM felt like keeping it as an option.
Oooooh, nerf bars...are those the Smittybilt ones that bolt to the frame? Got plans for them?
westech, the OP is talking about a M1008. No 10 bolts there.
Elwenil, aboonski is talking about on his M1008. 8 lug axles. You are correct about the backspacing issues though.
I had to have a local autoparts place that specialized in heavier stuff make me a u bolt for the front. The two on the driver's side were no problem, NAPA had those. The one on the passenger side was a PITA as no one had the right width. After a lot of searching I found the guys that made me...
Damn...years ago there was a guy in Four Wheeler's big competition from Canada with a big K5 on Unimog axles. I remember he ran a NP203 backwards or something like that. They said it acted as an overdrive to compensate for the low gearing of the Mog axles.
Easiest solution for this would be...
Just fine provided the driver does their part. Drove mine through most of a Northern Michigan winter a few years ago and several folks on here use theirs as daily drivers in snowy climates.
You'd need the gears and locker obviously, and probably a rebuild kit. I believe to put a Detroit Locker in that's all you need but I could be wrong. Consulting your local 4x4 shop, driveline shop, and/or any of the big name differential places in all the 4x4 mags could answer all your...
I looked at it today. Not impressive. Just that Kennedy's wish list of how to build up a diesel powered K30. It isn't even CUCV specific. 1 page including a big picture and rather generic info. Not worth the cost of admission unless you like diesel mags.
For the amount the gears alone cost you could have a set of 3/4 ton axles sitting there ready to go. Unless you personally know how to replace gears, or have someone willing to do it for free, I'd bet you could swap in 3/4 ton axles for less than the regearing alone costs.
Lockers aren't that...
Do you want a locker or limited slip? Planning on ever lifting the truck and/or running big tires?
Might consider just finding a 14FF with 3.73 or 4.10 gears to start. Better gears, better axle, and either an open diff or a Gov Lock that doesn't entirely suck.
