i was a supply NCO in the FLARNG and the first unit to recieve and convoy the new A3's. took them to FT Knox from ocala fl and back. not one problem.
bob tail bed.
you can use a generator trailer bed. it will give you the fenders you need, but the bed is 7 ft wide. you will have to cut it down to get it centered. look at the thread from dirtyfingernails. it is of my truck. i can give you more details if you are interested in this.
i willl be using the tool/battery box L brackets, cut down and attached to the frame and back of front fenders. i will be cutting the steps to mount on the bracket and plan on monting a peice of rubber mat to the top for traction.
the steering wheel on a 900 series 5 ton is 2 in smaller. the m35a3 has the same wheel. if you get a smaller wheel, you will need to get power steering. been there, done that, did the smaller wheel and p/s. if you use the air o matic, you only have to get air supply to the check valve...
You just stated the reasons for bobbing it. I am almost done with mine, and i will be driving it to work at least once a week to keep every thing in good working order. I have seen too many military vehicles get deadlined from just sitting in the motor pool and getting the oil checked and left...
I bought a deuce with winch for $3000 from a private sale. It has a title so that problem is solved. I will have $4000 in it when i am done and i will be able to say "i built it". Very powerful words. Means you don't just buy what you want , it means you have the ability to make what you want...
All you need is a two ended lug wrench, the bar that goes with it, a jack stand to hold the end up with, and a bumper jack minus the jack or the base. Place lug wrench on lug, place jack stand under outer end of lug wrench, align bar so you can hit it, and swing bumper jack with all you have on...
are you going to use the auto trans too. if so then i think you might have something there. would work well in a bob tail and then you can go muddin and power right on through the muck.
for the best out come, use a set of deuce springs and mounts. you don't need to add blocks to level out your truck and if you use a front drive shaft in the back, you get a 122 wheel base, plus, if you break your drive shaft you can move the fron to the back to get you home.
air o matic kit. they use air and are pretty simple to install. the alternative is a 5 ton power steering system. you have to trim this and install that and get the lines for it and build a resivior for the fluid. the air o matic used compress air fro m the system and a cylinder for assist...
I will have my truck done by then and i will SO BE THERE. This will be my first time with a whole bunch of army trucks and no commander to tell us to line up and get in.
