I thought about that too. I am thinking getting the RPM's down will extend my engine life. I do want to keep my 4.56's. Plus any upgrades I do could easily be swapped to a new engine if I need one.
My only question is how to get my wife to pay for this...maybe fake transmission problems...

I was reading about transmissions and none of them really jump out if you want a auto non computer trans. I was also thinking 6.2 replacement engines are way less than a Cummins and the gearvendor might let me get the most...
I am going after noise. I put the pad from LMC under the hood and will be adding insulation with the rubber mat to the cab soon. I need to do some rust prevention first.
One more question...would a 4bt be a better swap than a 6bt and what transmission? I realize this is blasphemy to some of you, but I am learning. YES, I used the search and read other forums.
I want your comments. I would never tow over 7000 lbs and would like to have the capability to tow 5...

Holy cow I stepped in it. By my calculations any engine swap is going to cost about the same, the Cummins just a little more. I don't want a Dodge and I don't like Dodge. The CUCV is a great truck even at 25 years old. It has parts civvy trucks don't have.
The 6.2 is great for what it is...
My best mod was changing the exhaust to 2 1/2" and VForce mufflers. I no longer slow down on hills and mountains and can even accelerate if I desire. Optima batteries, 60g glow plugs with new insulated connectors that fit, manual fuel pump and Cummins Fleetguard spin on filter, and gp override...
I understand the guys who want to preserve the CUCV, I really do as I hate seeing a sporterized military rifle, so don't be angry with me.
I decided to attach a receiver hitch for the time being and see how it tows. In the meantime I will be looking for a donor truck or engine with a 5.9...
I think I have bi-polar engine disorder and hope I don't get post-traumatic-engine-disorder. I really appreciate all those who commented as I now have allot to think about. :driver:
Got it! Turbo is better and I have to move one of the batteries to make it fit (from another thread). Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Afraid to ask, but what about those humvee engines available now? Are the parts interchangable with the CUCV? I come a long ways from my original 6bt idea. :mrgreen:

OK, new idea. What is the best 6.2 engine I can get? I am talking about upgraded parts, etc. I read to get a 1988 or newer and what transmission should I use? Does that mean a Humvee engine? I am looking for 4 gear non-computer auto if possible, OD does not matter.

Dang, there are always trade offs. I do need to take on some mountain driving to get where I want to be. Maybe instead of the bigger engine I should be looking at improving what I have to get by.
Cheaper than an engine upgrade. Am I shortening my engine life? I don't need to drive fast.
I would like to get 65 mph comfortably. 55 is OK, but gets boring.
I am reading about the 4bt. Can that engine tow up to 10,000 lbs? The forums say it fits better. I was told Frito-Lay has 6.2 and 4bt's in their trucks around here.
