When I weighed my RV at the scales it was 6500 lbs unloaded. I posted where one guy was towing 6600 lbs with a stock truck and receiver hitch w/brake controller.
I know this. That is why I am reading and asking. I am not a mechanic. I read the forums and try to understand the BS. To have...
I found this...maybe I will just make a few towing mods and see where it takes me. I am still making and engine-transmission backup plan so any ideas are appreciated.

Nothing...I want to be able to pull a big trailer and have the best engine and drive train I can get that will last. I plan on keeping this truck for a long time.
What I am doing is putting together a plan for the future and trying to understand the best way. I am thinking the NV4500 manual...
I am reading about the TH700-R4 transmission over the 4L80e that is electronic controlled. Or should I just convert to a manual NV4500 transmission? I know all this is going to be expensive. That is why I am making a plan now.
EDIT- 10 or 12 thousands dollars is still less expensive than a...
I just realized the NV4500 is a manual transmission and I want to keep it automatic. Basically I don't know...
That's why I am asking questions now. Also the transmission swap will go easier at the same time as the engine swap. I am learning.
I have a stock M1008 that I plan on swapping the engine to a 5.9 Cummins in the future.
After looking into this I can go the expensive way and have it done or I can use my friend's garage shop behind his business that is closed down and screaming for a project. I know some engine guys that...
I am adding some pics.
We used a red wire from the button to tap into the light blue wire which you cannot really see in the picture and of course a good ground.
Anyway, what took so long was we were looking on the right side under the dash area and all around not realizing it was right...
I would say it is worth the trouble because if you don't you have to grind the gp's down to fit. I payed a shop to change my plugs and the connectors the first time. It cost me $112. I have no intention of ever using Wellman again so it was worth it to me.
I watched while I did a cold engine start. Even though the gp wait light was 15 seconds the battery gauge showed what appeared to be the glows plugs drawing power for 15 more seconds.
I hope this helps with the discussion.
I have the self limiting 60g's. I don't know if chatter was the right word as I could hear something working. I did read all I could including the gp theory of op and I know my gp's are working. The manual override is not something I want to keep testing. I just want it to work in an...
I went with the 60g's and it seems my truck is running better. It takes 15 seconds instead of 12 to run the cycle, but I am less concerned about gp failure or swollen plugs. I have read both sides of the debate on this forum. I guess it is up to you and what you want to believe.
I am reading there are two ways to install the manual glow plug override. Is this true?
The first way the glow plug wait light still works and the second way the gp wait light works when the key is turned, but does not work when you push the manual button.
I guess the logical next question...
FYI-I had my fuel pump, filter, and glow plugs changed. The next day the truck would not turn over. When I took the air breather assembly off it started right up. The injection pump wire may have been the problem. The green wire. I don't know much, but it was frustrating to have all that...
OK, this is weird. I was looking for the injection pump (I know, I am still learning and it is in the front with the pink wire) and took the air filter assembly off to trace the gas line. Everything looked normal, so I tried to start the truck with the assembly still off and the truck started...
While I research and try to troubleshoot this I am open to any input.
I picked up my M1008 from the diesel shop yesterday and it ran fine. I even drove around town with no problems. Today it will not start. The batteries are good and connections tight.
The starter is working. I did the...
I thought about the heater and decided to carry some Diesel 911 with me all the time. I will try it for next winter, if I start having problems I will do something then. I know many here do not have fuel heaters in their diesel trucks.
I thought I was getting Stanadyne but when the job is done you are kind of stuck. 60g's on a M1008 are better. Change the connectors and never worry about finding them again.
My fuel heater is no longer connected. Will that be a problem this winter?
Here's the pics:
I agree, I would not buy such an outdated vehicle. It's just a money pit. I will say there are many civilian Chevy trucks from the 80's still running around my town. That would be a better buy IMHO. Not some beat up military failure of a vehicle I could never trust not to leave me broke down...
