metalworker,
If you can get a good deal on an MEP-112 you can most definitely use the power plant to get your MEP-003 running again. Is was done just over a year ago by none other than Kipman, Gimpyrobb, Oilcan and myself. Here is a link to the thread...Mid Ohio January Generator Rally!! (or...
We had a chance to work on Kips 701 this past weekend and got the situation resolved.
Thanks to all who posted good ideas. When I got to his place he had the schematics printed out for me and we got to work. It was indeed the low fuel shutdown float in the fuel tank causing the issue. We...
is Buff gonna bring the bowling pins again? I'm gonna pick up a spare from that "dreaded 1 - 10 split" this year. And since the ear drum is all healed up, I don't even need to worry about getting peanuts in my ear :cookoo:
I'll even bet that's why I thought we were being so quiet with the...
It's possible that the stator could still be bad even though you are getting plenty of AC voltage from it. Leave the wires hooked up to everything and check the AC voltage while you have the regulator hooked up to the stator. This will create a "load" on the stator...it's possible that the...
It doesn't matter where it is located on the terminal strip. What matters is that you have the correct wires connected with the correct wires on the other side of the strip. The "red" marked wire on the regulator is the +24, so it should be connected to the +24 wire on the generator. The...
I don't think that they make that much difference at all. Then again, I don't think the generators are all that loud to begin with. If you are standing right next to them, yes, they are a bit loud. But back off 20 feet or even go around the corner of a building and the noise isn't that great...
I would like to know more about these mufflers as well, because all of these sets already have mufflers from the factory. They are noisy, but additional mufflers will not help the noise much at all because the noise you are hearing is generator fan noise and diesel engine noise, not so much...
I don't really know anything about the 016's at all, but I can tell you for a fact that what all of you are referring to as the commutator in those pics is definitely NOT a commutator.
Reasons being...
First and foremost, these generators like it's bigger brothers in the MEP series are...
Sounds to me that you are on the right track. I doubt very much that the engine will turn the generator head and 2 dead cylinders. Sounds like a valve adjustment and compression test is in order for all the cylinders. Hopefully it's just valves and not broken rings or scored sleeves causing...
I believe the MEP-701's have an electrically operated fuel shut-off solenoid (not 100% positive though). If that is true, that is why you are shutting down when you disconnect the slave cable.
Your charging system is not working, therefore there is not enough voltage to hold the solenoid open...
My answer to the OP's question is that they are EXTREMELY reliable. I have two that run beautifully. The one was even stenciled from GL as unservicable, and that is the best running one of the two I own.
If it was rebuild it "should" have a reset tag located on the side of the control panel above the output lugs. It would say something like "reset at XYZ" and have a couple of hours, usually 2 stamped on the tag as well from the run in/break in period.
Peter,
it's strictly a mechanical gauge, and I was going to suggest the gauge swap, but the OP already stated he was going to do that.
My personal feeling, if you have the availability of a fresh engine to use, I would continue using the old one until the pressure starts to drop off even...
That end play probably isn't going to matter a whole lot unless it's really excessive. The reasons I say this are,
1, You are not (probably) going to be using it nearly as heavily as the Army did, so intermittent use should mean it could last for several years.
2, The bearing on the end of...
not a great quality picture, but that looks like a standard fuse holder (missing the fuse and cap of course) for a glass automotive (old style automotive) fuse.
If you don't mind, post your information and source. There may not be anybody who needs it at this particular point in time, but someday someone will. And your hard work and research would be greatly appreciated by them.
The "Tactical Quiet Generator" and the MEP-003a are different animals. The "TQG" should be an MEP-803. And that set is going to be an inverter generator IIRC. Nothing like the 003a's at all. Send me a PM with your e-mail addy and I'll send them to you.
Good enough reason. I just couldn't think of a need for shutting it down. Once you trust your set to not leak oil and fuel, you'll just put some ear plugs in and go in there and re-fuel it while running.
Dumb question, why are you shutting it down to refuel? Even if you are not using the built in aux. fuel set-up, you will do no damage to the set if you just open the fuel cap and refuel it while it's running.
