I'm glad you hit a home run on that truck especially since you could not check it out first. I always have a policy to check something out in person before I bid on it. When I have violated my rule, I have been bitten hard several times.:( But sometimes you do get lucky! Nice truck!!:)
Vintage Iron, hurry and get those puppies mounted so you can give us a road test report to see if they really do help! This thread has me 'hanging on the edge of my seat' and I don't want to fall off while waiting for results!!
Rob, I always thought your first truck build was very innovative with such great touches like the pop up roof for the front bedroom etc, so I wonder why you rebuilt and downsized? Your second build is very well thought out and innovative as well, but I was just curious as to why you decided to...
Barron, you might want to explain to the folks who aren't familar with that neck of the woods about the section of interstate going southwest out of the Phoenix area where it is posted that you should not stop for any reason, and that you travel that section of highway at your own risk due to...
Hey ProStockTom, if you get one of those, let us know please! They look like one sweet truck, it looks like a dump truck with a front end loader. Wish they were not so far away, but I also suspect they will bring big bucks too!
Maby we could get GoatWhispers to enter the export business and...
Rob- it's good to have you on board!! Please share as many pics and info as you can on this site- we will all love to see and read your entries!!
An older retired Federal LEO friend of mine tells the story of when he was a kid in SoCal and he and another high school buddy went into the military surplus store to poke around and look for cool stuff to buy. Don't know how they ended up with an anti-tank rifle and about 20 rounds of ammo...
Lets hope it is just the injector copper seals that are bad. That sounds like the most logical explanation. While you have the heads off, are you going to have the valves and guides looked at as well? I would imagine that they are good to go, but it sounds like your mechanic is well versed in...
Alot of LEOs are x-military and like the heavy weapons and vehicles they had while in active duty. So when they get a chance to get something HD with a strong intimidation factor for a really reasonable price, why not go for it?? To upfit a civilian based truck to withstand the work it might get...
If thier diesel costs are about the same as the US, and if he gets about what a 5-ton would get with such a big camper body on it, then it must cost him close to $1 per mile to move that truck around. Those kind of numbers keep me from getting serious and moving ahead on a 5-ton and a camper box...
The stronger axles of a 5-ton will handle the increased rotational stress loads of the bigger tires much better?? There does come a point of diminishing returns while stretching the limits of tire size! Plus the expense of new tires, rims, lifts, and wear and tear on the rest of the drive train...
I thought the grader blade was a good idea on the truck. Sort of a dual purpose blade, you can use it down when you are pushing snow to help remove snow and ice build up on the surface you are doing snow removal on or use in to smooth gravel or rock in the summer time on the road surfaces.
I...
His travel experiences are an interesting read also- where they go, how they get there, what they see along the way, etc. Sort of an arm chair travelog down under.
But what I find most interesting on his website is his determination to see the project thru to completion, overcoming obstacles...
This 'Aussie down under' came up with a really cool conversion of his own making on a 5-ton 6X6 Aussie x-military truck. Lots of good ideas here for your own RV type conversion-

There is an Aussie down under who took an Aussie 5-ton military truck and made a very nice off road capable RV that bears looking at. His website is: Rob Gray :: graynomad
or try: Rob Gray :: graynomad :: wothahellizat
As he calls it- "Winnebago meets Mad Max"
This is very interesting to see!
Ahhhh, the agony of making decisions on a thin wallet! My deuce was an amazing truck, I loved it but the lack of power steering was a real bummer when you get older and get arthritis in your shoulders and arms. The ability to use the duel fuel engine for a mix of WMO and diesel can certainly...
Be careful from now on XTS, you just used up almost a life time's supply of good luck on that one!
Think twice now about everything you do, cuz' you might not have any good karma left!
Alex said the other day that the next step is to pull the pan and try gentle persuasion with a hydraulic jack against one of the crank throws. With so much surface area between the big pistons and the cylinder walls, even a little bit of surface rust can make the starter a non-starter.
