Yeah, SirBliss, but they are always a loooooong ways away from me! I wish the price of diesel would get down to where it ought to be- less then regular gas, and then I could afford to have one shipped or go get it myself.
Sweet truck! Be interesting to know what kind of fuel mileage you get when you get her roadworthy. I don't know if the wind resistance from the box or the overall weight would be the worst culprit. I have lusted after one out here in SW Idaho at Idaho Motor Pool, you can see it on the website...
Here are some pics of Big Bertha! I swear the engine is over 5 feet long just by it's little self! The tires are about 4.5 feet tall. I bet she gets all of 1 gallon per mile for mileage. Just out of sight to her left is an 813 5-Ton Cab-Chassis that looks like a little toy parked next to Bertha...
And I am not one to figure out if there is an upgraded HO amp alternator out there a person could add. But I am sure there are others in the club who will know, and offer ideas on that. Down in AZ in the summer, it is almost a 'must have' or just park the truck during the really hot times. Which...
That is a very good idea Simp- line up some help ahead of time if needed when you go thru an area where some other members and sympathetic folks might be.
Boomer, I'll get back up there this coming week and get some pics and post them. How were you going to get it down to Az? It must weigh 35,000+ lbs. It's what is called a very 'manly' truck!!
I was at Alex's Idaho Motor Pool today looking your BIG truck over! I like big machines, and big trucks and yours is indeed a very big truck!! And of course I was drawn to your engine, the hood side curtains are off and you can see the engine from both sides quite well. I could tell something...
That comes out to a little over 6mpg if my math is right. Not to bad I suppose. My deuce would get 9-10 mpg at 55mph unloaded. I suspect it might have done even better at a steady 45 mph but then I never had the patience to try that.
Thanks Doghead- I tried a search for MPG but- being somewhat technologically challenged, I could not come up with anything. Spent to much time riding the short bus to school!
Perhaps I should just figure on shipping such a truck instead of driving it out myself. At $1 a mile, plus all the time...
Been thinking of buying an 813 or 814 from back east- and it's a long ways to drive it back out west to NE Oregon. But the going average rate for for having it hauled out here is at least $2 a mile. So I have been debating with myself if it would be cheaper to catch a ride or fly back and drive...
Dirtgum, I think you got the one I wanted but could not afford right now! Did you get if off of EbayMotors, down near Phoenix? You are one tough guy to drive it back home that far, and your wife deserves kudos for riding along with you.
I sold my M35A2 a while back, and want a Pinz...
Old rule of thumb- if you can't hold your hand on the bearing cap due to the heat, it is most likely too hot. Could you have a brake shoe dragging that is causing the heat build up from the drum to transfer to the bearing caps? Just something to check.
Or perhaps an overly enthusiastic young motorpool wrench overtightened the con-rod bolts and in doing so fractured one or both causing them to eventually fail due to extreme metal fatigue caused by the extreme stress of over-tightening. Wow, that almost sounds like a textbook explanation...
The Great Carnac is spot on folks, knowledge is power! If you don't know where to find the knowledge in the TM, then you have no power. As in: no power or ability to get things done, or done right. Once you know where the info is and go get that info- you have the ability and power to get it...
That tall of a tire on the standard rim was never designed to fit, so you have to expect rubbing and clearance issues. You can go to a different rim with a wider off-set to the outside that would help.
There is a 7-inch metal cutting blade made for a skill saw, they are amazing and cut thru steel like wood. I have cut up to 5/8 inch plate with one, and was so suprised to see the clean cut it made. But it is hard to beat a portable bandsaw, or a plazma cutter. If you cut and section a frame, do...
Most likely it will be a NPW (nuke pulse weapon) that will put most of the USA back to the horse and buggy days. The electrical grid, computer systems, even the computers that run your car will be fried. Only the older MVs like the deuce will still run. So you can just go from vehicle to vehicle...
Here is a way old timers do it. They put a inner tube in the tire, and then air the tire up. With the weight and size of the super singles, the extra weight of the inner tube is not really much of an issue. The cost is a consideration, but not as expensive as a hospital visit or mortuary costs.
