I'd recommend planning it out well. I saw one of these conversions that left a lot to be desired, sitting at too much of an angle, fractions of an inch from the firewall, extremely loud and rattly. The guy who owns it wishes he left it stock.

Your best bet may be a wire harness transplant from a junked or parted out CUCV, 1009, 1008 and 1028 have essentially the same harness. It is not difficult, much easier than making custom harness.

To the original topic; it is better to use the original sized pulleys. The smaller ones are likely to overcharge a bit.
If you are running stock 24V, you will be better off finding a good used CUCV harness if it needs to be replaced. There are too many differences from stock 12V system to make an aftermarket 12V harness an easy installation.

Yeh, there are a lot of grounds, and of course one should clean and secure them all, just pointing out a common problem that is not obvious on first look.
There is a ground wire in the front marker/directional signal socket that is often causes the problem you have. The contact in the plastic socket gets iffy, the easiest fix is to replace socket(s) but they can be fixed also.
