How much work do you want to put into it and how much shorter are you talking about? If you disassemble the jack, you will probably have to shorten the outside tube, the inside tube and the screw that moves it up and down. If you don't mind the fab work, it can be done.

I tossed around the idea of cutting down the poles and bows and creating a frame for a cover for my M416 I tow behind my jeep. It would have been a lot of work and ultimately, I think much easier to just build a new frame for it instead of cutting up that one.
