A steep sand hill WILL be hard to go UP, no matter what truck you are driving, even a dozer will have trouble if steep enough.

    winch problems

It WILL NOT have anything to do with the pump, it is a pto NON-engagament issue, with the engine OFF, with the pto cover off, check the movement of the sliding gear, see what is STOPPING it from sliding all the way to engagement.

    winch problems

BEFORE you pull things apart, LOOK for a lever stop, there is going to be something SIMPLE to prevent the pto from engaging and burning up the pump, does not make sence for a major take-apart to prevent engagement, take the back cover off the pto and have a look.

    Two M-55s

A good running gasser will get 3+ to 6+ mpg(my 1952 m52 got 6+), the gasser has a lot more power then the multi or the mack. You could use one truck for parts for the other. You should find a guide that knows these trucks to help in the project

Stumbled upon a wrecker boom/winch set-up Fort Madison IA

The m815 is a bolster truck, the front half of the bolster truck/trailer combo, used to haul pipe, poles, ect., The m815 has a behind the cab winch and guard like the 2 1/2t pipe line truck. Sure would like to see some pictures. Wonder if this could have been a xm815 with a self loader/pole setter

    winch problems

I am guessing more of a "ENGAGEMENT STOP" where the engagement lever CAN NOT do the full travel to engage, could be as simple as a adjustment bolt After looking at tm 9-2320-22-24p-2, I see that the control cables ARE adajustable, I am guessing the the cables are just backed out so the pto CAN...

    winch problems

Pull the pump, make sure the coupling is there, on the Marine trucks, I would think the coupling would be pulled so the pump CAN NOT be operated because there is no place for the pressure to go, this WILL burn up the pump.
