Nothing to add just welcome from another Minnesotan. Good to see another LMTV in the state. They seem to be pretty rare up here.

I cut and pasted the drawing into a 2D CAD program and scaled it up. Once scaled up I got the full size dimensions (relatively close).

A little Googling and I found this... http://fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m1083.htm. Based on these dimensions it's around 54" C-C. That leaves around 8" between tires.

What were the symptoms of it going bad? Did it just stop working or were there bad noises involved? Mine clunks 3-4 times before it starts the truck and I'm not sure if it's the starter or something upstream.

I'm curious about this too because I'm not sure what sounds are normal. Mine makes a droning/growning noise when coasting and decelerating. It isn't alarmingly loud but it definitely seems like it's coming from the planetaries. Oil levels are correct and clean. The Michelin's are noisy too but...

I'm going with a High-Low box to keep the height at a minimum mostly for off road clearance but it also lowers the CG and maybe a little less wind resistance. I'm still debating whether or not to remove the C channels on the frame but either way I'll be mounting the box on a 3 point system...

So my '96 M1078 has begun making a few clunk noises before the starter engages. Doesn't happen every time but it happens more often than not. Runs great once started. First thought was bad batteries so I got 2 new one and tried just those 2 and got the same thing. I then hooked up 2 good older...

I had the same problem and it was the solenoid sticking. I could tap mine when the engine temp was above 200 and it would release the air and start the fan. Did that for the last few hundred miles of my recovery... with help from my passenger of course.

I won't make this a full trip report because the title is regarding city owned trucks but I will say that was a really fun 900 mile trip. The truck was well maintained or just never messed with and everything was in good working order. Only issues we had were a headlight went out and about half...
