Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Oh cool, thanks. Will take a look.

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Yeah, 1659201: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200395477_200395477?cm_mmc=Housefile-_-RECEIVED-_-707-_-CONF From the parts diagram the guy said that 781829 is the generator-side of that harness, and that the panel-side isn't orderable. I think my options in order of preference...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

No identifying info on the connector that I can see. Re: the maintainers, that seems like a good price for a decent solution. If I can get this bit done! The parts guy at Northern Tool implied that "all" generators have the same type of connection to the panel and that this connector should be...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

I got the generator out of storage and finished cutting the hole for moving J7, mounted everything back up, put the muffler back on, reconnected the wires and fuel lines, rigged up a 24 volt battery with some old car batteries, and she came right to life. It has been a loooong time since I saw...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

kloppk, Did you ever finish development of your remote start compatible with standard gen heads / kit? With Winter coming, it's probably time to get my MEP out of storage and get it buttoned back together.

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Your signature link to those kits isn't working for me - don't have one of those generators but wanted to take a look. Man I would think it would be... the value it creates for the most commonly broken things on the MEP-831a's while turning them into a superior diesel generator, geez. But I am...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

@kloppk, what did you do with the alternator and battery charger in order to still charge the battery?

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

What was the limitation here? If you know the current on both legs, can't you show the combined output? Maybe leave contacts for a leg overload/imbalance indicator light or something... or a 3 way momentary toggle switch that lets you see combined versus per leg... Spitballing someone else's...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

**** YEAH brother. I was planning on slowly figuring out how to restore most of the functionality, but I am somewhat electronics stupid. "Let me know if you need any additional testers", of course. Heh In addition to making everything built-in work, I wanted to add and think about and possibly...

    MEP-831a Troubleshooting

Marcello, the generator itself can handle quite a bit more power, but that outlet, and the wiring to it, is a 15 amp outlet. It's a "convenience" outlet. That is not where you should be drawing the bulk of your power. Down at the bottom on the same side are the main lugs DieselAddict mentions...

Converting a MEP-831A to standard generator

Well not that I have made much progress on anything super interesting... But had some power outages here and after hearing some gensets spinning up and seeing "no ETA for power restore", since I'm home alone with small kids I figured my manhood was at stake. I got the engine with Northstart...

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

Just got my engine lifted out... What a pain in the ass. Not sure I'll be able to maneuver everything around on the way back in without breaking... something. Still no idea what the taper is supposed to be on this engine... but I'll try to take another measurement, and probably get a different...

MEP-831A SLC100 Governor Controller Replacement Prototype

    > How do you envision monitoring your gensets RPM to maintain 60 Hz? I'm going to set the mechanical governor to maintain 3600 rpm so that lifting the governor leaves it mechanical. I would like to eventually have a frequency read offo of the AC as well, but I think I can leave it up to the...

MEP-831A SLC100 Governor Controller Replacement Prototype

Could you provide a schematic of specifically what you built for the PWM governor control? I'm turning my genny into a standard non-inverter generator... I hope... and the governor control (for "run", idle no load, and shut off) is something I'm going to have to figure out. Any chance your PWM...

Grounding Question: Beating a dead horse

My understanding (IANAE) is that Earth ground is ONLY supposed to be made at the first distribution panel. So... I'm not sure what's "Best" otherwise since the only thing that I think is code, is to run that fourth wire. Ground is important... so it's probably less dangerous and more likely for...

Wireless AutoStart with Remote Parameter Monitoring

Do you have any parameters for how you're driving the governor actuator, assuming the 802 has one like the 831a. Is it just PWM?

How to remove the alternator from a MEP-831A

Yeah, my gensets have less than 300 hours on them. All were in good looking condition. I am not reinstalling my rotor... Removed the whole thing. This is part of my slow conversion to a standard diesel generator.

How to remove the alternator from a MEP-831A

Giving this its own post since I couldn't find any instructions that really prepped me for it. All parts listed can be found at Advance Auto. I know this is dumb, obvious, and even taken for granted by many... but when I was looking at the various pullers I had, the configuration of the rotor...

MEP 831 FAQ for owners or potential buyers

What Is the taper on the crankshaft coming out of the engine? I found 2 1/3" per foot in one place.... measured something entirely different (and probably wrong) in a hurry this morning... and am really really hoping it is 2 1/4" per foot. Anyone have better info or better with their calipers?
