I can't remember where it was posted, Freighttrain knew but he's been banned :roll:, but on one of our Ford idi sites a guy used a Ford 460 oil pump and welded a socket extension between a starter motor and the 460 oil pump. He mounted it all on an old pressure washer frame along with a battery...
Once you fix the EGR stuff it's a good motor as long as you take care of it. The reason Ford got rid of the motor was because of tightening gov emmisions requirements, just like the 7.3.
It's not a problem anymore because I bought a 2004 F-250 w/ a Powerstroke. I only use the M1009 when I need to back the trailer into the backyard because of the shorter wheelbase.
The reason why most don't run drums is because rims under 20" won't fit.
Since the stock rims are too skinny and wider ones like HEMMT are too heavy, most people go with 16.5" beadlocks. So they have to lose the drums for them to fit.

I had diesel bug in one of my old Ford trucks. It clogged the entire fuel system and I had to replace everything!
When I dropped the tanks the smell was HORRIBLE! All of those microorganisms were growing in the bottom of the tank between the water and the dies...er...varnish. :shock:
