Well, got the NOS pistons installed yesterday and plan to lite it off today if things go as planned. Cylinder walls cleaned up nicely with a light hone.
Good news! Found two NOS pistons and got them at a great price. Just have to find the time to install. Tied up the last week offline troubleshooting the pc. Believe a windows update killed it.
I did that with a red shop rag-layed it on the base of a running 200 hp compressor motor. Didn't notice that my rag had disappeared. Just saw red cloth fuzz raining down for 10 or 15 minutes. Took a minute to figure out what happened. Sure glad there was not any small tools in the cloth...
Guys,
The readings were taken with a Harbor Freight gauge. I did not have a trusted gauge to check it with, so I had to assume the reading was close. With the electrical issues in this unit I was in a hurry to get it going. I have already said in a previous posting that I had used starter...
amolaver,
The first thing I do on a new (to me), 002 is take all of the fuel pumps off, clean up, and put one from the tandem setup on the shelf for spare. Like Harleyd315 says, you do not need two pumps in tandem.
Nice troubleshooting in finding the problem!
David
Went back tonight and looked at the #1 piston ring area. The piston material between #1 and #2 ring groove is cracked in two places allowing a 2" piece to float and let bypass through. That would be where the major pressure leak is coming from.

Storeman,
I an going to "beat the bushes" for a little bit to see what turns up. If nothing, I will look to parting out. Will contact Munchies if I have no luck.
Thanks,
David
gimpyrobb-Thanks. As my pistons are standard, I would be looking for the same and would need two pistons with rings if available. My luck with removing and replacing rings isn't that great..
Thanks,
David
Ok-back from the beach. Tore into the 002 today and found a few things. Found most of the bolts for the vibration dampers in the channel on the frame. Whoever putting back together couldn't find them? Found all piston rings were free, but covered with some kind of goop. While looking at the...
Jerry,
I made up new oil hoses first thing and pulled shroud to install. The hoses were checked before install and were free and clear. Oil cooler looked ok at that time. Have not pulled yet as the problem is not actual high oil pressure, it is the crankcase pressure. Don't believe high oil...
Isaac-1 the dip stick is marked 002a.
When I lost the oil, being that low, it was still blowing out the breather. I am still thinking the rings are stuck. I don't know why, but something tells me that much blow-by has to come from the combustion pressure. I did a compression test before I...
Did not notice oil gauge pegged. As I recall, it was in the 45 psi range as all of my units are when cold. Both pistons move in tandem. This unit is the one I wrote about having the ip block shims glued with some red stuff (like leak-lock). O-ring was also missing on ip. I was looking at...
Read your link and I don't believe what I have is normal. With the oil fill/dipstick cap on and tight, the oil squirts out the vent and soaks the ip pump. I went through 2 quarts of oil in about 4 minutes of running. Found it all on the floor under the unit. I also can not get the rpm up to...
You guys have been great for help in the past. I have a new one for you. My 002a (3rd one), has been giving me fits and then some. Fixed a4 and vr boards and tested-work great in working unit. Still have no power when running on this one, but that is for later. IP was bad and have a working...
