These are all good points. The Cummins is tweakable. But 250 HP is more than enough for me. If I can get the "stock" garbage truck engine running I'll probably leave it alone. I'm not sure what the Cummins 8.3 redline is. I know it's at least 2800 rpm's, maybe a little more. I am shooting...
Note to self: Don't mud bog in reverse at max speed with six giant tractor tires.
My main goal with this truck is to build a bulletproof RV with a slide-in camper. Secondary would be to pick up steel from the steel yard & lumber from Home Depot. I might have a load of gravel once a decade or...
Yes, I degreased it to get a better look at it. It's the Cummins 8.3C 250HP version manufactured in 1993. According to the speedometer of the garbage truck it only has 12,000 miles on it. That metal bar over the engine is the radiator bracket that bolts to the frame. I'm slowly dismantling...
I took the entire ECU console out of the garbage truck. Allison places all the electronics in a dustproof center console. What I am assuming is the Allison is already programmed to shift Based on engine rpm. If this is true, then it should shift fine. It will be at the correct rpm, but...
I have the OPPOSITE question. Sometime this summer I want to start a crew cab. But instead of chopping the bed or bobbing the truck, I was wondering if anyone has ever moved the rear axles towards the rear 4 ft or so? And then bolted/welded an extension to the very REAR of the frame. That...
Mudguppy,
That engine out of the garbage truck I bought is the 8.3 Cummins. From the specifications it looks like it actually weighs about 300 lbs less than the multifuel. With the heavier Allison transmission it probably weighs almost identical to the stock Deuce drivetrain. And shifted...
I think I'm just going to stick with the Rockwell. I'm kind of anxious to start the engine swap ... maybe 2-3 months from now when work settles down. You know what they say, strike while the iron is hot.
My biggest fear is being in the middle of nowhere if the transfer case decides to go pop...
Anybody know if the stock transfer case will hold up to a Cummins 8.3 engine?
When I swap this engine & transmission in, it would be a good time to swap the transfer case if it is needed.
I read a few posts here where people suggested Oshkosh 55000. Would that be the same as this transfer...
I'm in Henderson near the old Community College campus. If you are in one of the newer housing developments they probably won't have enough space. As you can see from my pics, I barely have enough space on the side of my house. And that includes the chainsaw job I did on the neighbor's tree.
Greetings. I'll bookmark this thread & show you the truck once the engine gets swapped. Work is going to keep me busy most of the summer. And now I'm anxious to drop the new drivetrain in. I either have time or money, but never both!
When I first bought the truck my wife said it was garbage. After I swap in this engine, it looks like she'll be right.
That dump body is HUGE in person. The yard guys said they tried lifting it with multiple fork lifts but it wouldn't budge. Plus it's full of stolen cardboard...
Yeah, I hear you on that one. Where I live salvage diesel parts are very hard to find. We don't have a diesel salvage yard in Las Vegas. The closest ones are in Southern California and they are $$$. The garbage truck was a fluke because of the police impound.
Actually, this is the exact...
You want my Multifuel? Michigan's quite a freight quote from Vegas for that. The multifuel runs good. But I absolutely HATE the Spicer. But sure, if you want to buy the multifuel I suppose I don't really need it.
Since the Cummins is already bolted up to the tranny and has the PTO hydraulic...
He offered me the entire truck. But, as you can see, I live in the suburbs. He said I could have anything off the truck for a grand. They wanted me to take it with the front axle. I politely declined and asked for it to be "streamlined" for me. Technically, it has tons of hydraulics, air...
I took surface streets & drove really slow. Why is it every ##$# jerk in the world has to get 3 inches from my back bumper on an upgrade stop light while I'm hauling maybe 6-7 thousand pounds in the bed? Don't they understand I WILL ROLL BACKWARDS, even just a little?
Here's the engine. I...
Yes, I bought an actual garbage truck.
I was looking for a Ross steering box a few months ago for a Gringletaube steering project. I never found the Ross box. But here is what I did find.
It's a 1994 CCC garbage truck - Crane Carrier Corporation out of Oklahoma.
The story that I was told...

If you're going to pay $400 for a Ross box, it may as well be freshly rebuilt by professionals.
All you'll find on HeavyTruckParts is rusted junk for the same price. It'd be worth it if the box was only $50. Then you could...
