I don't quite follow when you say that you 'can't get the column back together'... did the outer tube slide apart from the inner bits?

If you don't use the support bracket at the rear of the starter (opposite of the bellhousing end), you stand the risk of breaking the block where the starter bolts up...

'Bondo' by design is to be used in thicknesses no greater than 1/8"; any thicker than this & you run a risk of cracking under the paint. It was originally designed to replace lead fillers used in bodywork.

You could install the Stud Girdle kit to ease your mind, but the GM block will eventually crack. 85% of the core 6.X blocks we saw when I was working for a major engine remanufacturer were cracked, typically in the main journal web areas... fact of life that the older blocks will...

In the civilian models, the C-code motors were typically setup with EGR & had lower power numbers, while J-code motors were open intake 'heavy-duty' versions with a bit more power & torque.

Nice to note that the trucks aren't allowed to haul more than 500 lbs... a 3-man crew consisting of a driver, a 250 lb passenger & 251 lb passenger makes you illegal...

Are you running the rear brace on the starter? You might be 'ballooning' the torque converter if trans temps are getting too hot - this could lead to bending/bowing of the flexplate... and use a GM factory flexpate (in case you were using cheap Chinese replacement from parts house)
