From what I've read on my CUCV research (want a 1008 REAL bad but no money... real sad...) It could be as simple as an air leak at the fuel filter or line. You would loose start up prime and could be sucking air when idling.

My 84 K30 had the lights go bye-bye. It ended up being the bulkhead connector. No other systems were affected SOOO I just ran a nice fused power direct to the switch.
Of course checking fuses, wiring, switches etc comes first.
On a serious note when I hit a wall on a project I will clean up all the parts/tools I have out for it. Inventory the parts I have/need and set up project piles.
