I purchased my trailer and generator via separate GL auctions and waffled back and forth as to whether to stay trailer mounted or permanently ground mounted. I'm leaving it on the trailer, at least for now, in case I need the generator at my mother's house or some other family member.
I have...
If you think the military trucks could jostle a person, you should have experienced being crammed into a fully loaded cattle car or a helicopter!! I'd take a truck any day of the week.

Keith_J has just touched upon some of the junk clues for a generator that should be avoided. I relied on some visual clues that, on the surface, seemed to indicate an abused machine, but in reality indicated a rebuilt unit. I noticed what originally looked like badly weathered cardboard boxes...
Count your blessings. That is a remarkable deal for a confirmed functioning generator on a trailer. For comparison, I would suggest looking at some of the upcoming auctions on GL AFTER they close. Based on past auctions, I expect that the same generator on the same trailer will go for hundreds...
I'd be careful about posting links to active/pending auctions because of the site rules that Steelsoldiers has. Instead, you may wish to PM some of the more knowledgeable folks in some of the generator threads and ask specific questions. You'll quickly learn, as did I, who are the knowledgeable...
GL equipment is certainly a crap shoot. I got very lucky by being patient and waiting for a good week. In my case, I got a Depot rebuilt 002 that was sealed and stored for one year before going out to auction. Don't forget to add the auction fee, recovery costs and the cost of bringing the beast...
If it works properly and comes on a decent trailer, I think it's a steal at the offered price, but that's just my opinion. I'd get over there and do your evaluation quickly before someone else does. The last group of MEP-002A's on trailers (single gens, not dual's) that I tracked at Letterkenny...
Others have already given you ideas on what to look for and how to evaluate. I just wanted to remark on the pricing. I recently acquired a Depot rebuilt MEP-002A and an M101A2 trailer via separate GL auctions. The gen set cost me $800, an $80 auction fee and a bit over $500 for Old Dominion to...
If swapping the scale is a simple process, go for it. If not, I'd simply install the new meter and put a red nail polish/paint mark at the 60 hertz mark and call it a day!! I've never opened one of these panel meters before. Is it a simple process?? Or is it problematic due to the sealing...
I'm hoping to do a serious load test of my new generator sometime over the next couple of weekends. I'll be interested to hear your findings regarding max load and fuel economy.
John
Wrapped up a bit early today and came home to wrap up this project. I completed the oil adapter changeover and re-checked the fuel system. The generator started up within 15 seconds. I think it took that long for the injector pump and the lines to the injectors to prime. Subsequent starts were...
Update:
Tom's adapter kit arrived today. Wow, I'm surprised at the efficiency of the USPS in this case!! I thought only bills and junk mail arrived this quickly. Anyway, the threaded rod is in place and I am letting the Loctite set up overnight. The Loctite specs indicated 6+ hours for full set...
I second that. If anyone thinks I was pressured, they are wrong. In case anyone is interested in my reasoning, I was initially planning to get the gen up and running fully stock, then switch to Tom's spin-on oil filter adapter. It seemed more logical at the time, but the lack of the spring and...
Keep an eye out for trailers out of Fort Drum. It is actually closer to us here in Mass than Fort Meade is. In my case, I got an M101A2 out of Fort Meade a few weeks ago that was pretty cherry and I'm quite happy with it, but beware of recovery costs. I waited for a week in which GL had a...
This is my Friday evening update:
I know a lot of you are following this generator thread and I appreciate all the input thus far. As everyone knows, the missing retainer and spring for inside the oil canister is all that keeps me from test firing this bad boy. Tom PM'd me this morning, I sent...
I'm already on top of that. I sent him a PM last night asking for the details for purchasing his adapter kit. Based on the video, that kit looks like an ideal modification for this gen set. Meanwhile, I'd like to find out the dimensions of the spring and retainer so that I can continue the prep...
I've run into one last hurdle. I am missing the retainer and spring from inside the oil canister (part numbers 8 and 9 of Figure 4-30 on page 4-36 of the -12 TM. I cannot believe I missed this earlier. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a replacement spring and retainer??? Everything else is...
You bring up a good point. I tried to switch my wife's car over to full synthetic, but the oil consumption sky-rocketed, no doubt due to the many miles already on the engine. In this case, I plan to try full synthetic, but watch oil consumption/leakage very carefully. Much of the engine and...
