Unless there are metal flakies in the oil, or pieces, its hard to tell a good one, from a bad one, by just looking inside. If the oil looks clean in the new one, try it. Trannys can last a long time.

Make sure you have the cylinders facing the proper direction. They are double cylinders & have a right & left - there are two sizes of pistons in them.

Heat the nuts - get the nuts off, Then put another hydrolic jack under the threaded portion of the exposed bolt and use the weight of the truck to push them up. Might have to use a hammer on the out side to get them broke loose.

Pinions need adjustment from time to time. If there is side/end play, your seal won't hold. Take out a shim or two, to zero out the play. The shims set the "preload "(which isn't much), on the bearings. The pinion nut on the end, holds the assembly together.

Torque settings there are deceiving! Because if you can get a torque wrench on it (keeping it from turning, while your at it), you will want to make it to the next notch in the nut, so you can get the cotter pin in to lock it. Use an impact on it, and call it good, and it will be.
