Mine are QuickStart 1100 ca. They work good. Last owner put them in. I don't know much about them, I just check them all the time to make sure they're full of fluid and fully charged. It gets as cold as -40* here. I don't have battery heaters (battery "blankets") and these will still start the...
Injector stuck open would be my first guess, but since you replaced those.. Did you test compression yet? missfiring low compression cylinder would do that. Although it'd have to be just a little low on compression if it cleans up at higher rpms. Are you sure the new ip is good?
Can you see any runout on the pulleys? (looks like they aren't quite round). I used a piece of 1/2" x 1/8" bar steel and lay it across 2 pulleys at a time. Helped me to see alignment better. Also, check the brackets. My power steering bracket cracked and wobbled around (barely at all) and...
The idea is that you want to equalize the load on the two wheels. With one wheel on the ground, and they other in the air, the load distribution is 0% : 100%. Normal diffs put more power to the wheel with the least load. (Not expert on torsion axles, but I understand them to be similar). If one...
Just don't hit the breaks on ice :P short wheelbase M1009 will do about a 9000* rotation if your steering wheel is not perfectly straight :P Thankfully, the 4x4 with rear locker will get you out of the ditch. (can you tell I've done this before :P)
:funny:No worries, I do not have long hair. As for being freaky, I'm "that guy who drives the army truck" in my neighborhood :P so some would call me freaky. I'd be in, but I'm up in central Canada. Maybe one day I'll make the trip. Have fun guys!
I heard that GM used a filter that fits in the stanadyne FM100 base on the newer trucks with a 6.5 (like 1995+). That's why I chose it. Parts availability is important to me, cause I go all over the place. I bought 3 filters with the filter base over a year ago.. I still haven't replaced the one...
Stock filter bases almost always leak on these things. I went spin on, no more problems. Haven't touched the filter unit since I put it in, money well spent. Mine is stanadyne FM100 system. Pricey ($120ish with shipping) but awesome. If it needs CRANKING to start, you have an air/fuel leak (air...
:ditto::ditto: My M1009 breaks work awesome. Better than my vac assisted vehicles. They did not change much when my Power Steering pump went bad (just less power assistance). You for sure have a master cylinder / break lines problem. One time, a kid ran out in front of my truck. I slammed the...
10w30 is ok, Just make sure it's diesel oil, Marked "C" ex: cf cd not "S" sf, sd. You need the soot handling ability. I run 15w40 all year round. It gets to -40* here sometimes. Thicker oil helps old beat up motors hold compression and can make up for worn bearings to some extent. Some also...
Check out where the fuel pump (low pressure lift pump) mounts to the block. Mine leaked there. Yes, it seems odd, but the fuel pump mounts to a hole that has oil in it.
:ditto:Find the pink wire under the front of the air cleaner. Strip some insulation off it and attatch a short wire to it that goes to +12volts on the front battery. Electrical tape connections so nothing falls off and shorts out. Go for a drive. If it doesn't die - you have electrical problems...
I wouldn't worry about a little blue smoke right at startup. Most of the old diesel things I've had seem to do this. Probably a little oil getting through valve stems or cylinder not sealing as well before properly oiled. Just check oil often (as usual) and keep listening for any changes.
On...
Oil heaters don't heat the block very well. The block is what needs to be warm to start a diesel. (block + heads, good heat conductivity between the block and heads, heating block heats heads too). Heating oil helps prevent slow lubing at the start, but doesn't help much with starting. I had 550...
Usually the engine block drain on these things is a pain to get out. It's on the Drivers side, under the exhaust manifold towards the front of the engine. I just pull off a rad hose, it's wayy faster. Freeze plug block heaters are BY FAR the best for heating vs power usage. I have two of them...
I have sylvania "one step below yours" and they kick a$$ too. Mine are not ultra.. I wanna say "extravision"? They cost $16 at my parts store. Standard lights cost $12. Well worth the $8 a set in my opinion. I don't sell lights either. Good thread idea.
So long as the engine is running, the 2 alternators on the stock cucv set up charge each battery independently. Even if you run a winch on only one of them, just let the truck run and it'll keep both charged (or not take too long to fill the low one back up). Personally - I like hydraulic...
