Sounds like it was not an isolated ground alternator.
When buying a CUCV alternator always check for continuity between the ground terminal and the case. If you have continuity and it was sold as an isolated ground return it immediately (or take it apart and modify it into an isolated ground).
Auto glass will cut down on the amount of solar energy reaching the photovoltaic panel. I have a photovoltaic battery charger and it goes from half scale on the dash to full scale when on the hood (exactly what the scale means in terms of absolute power I don't know).

I put the disconnect in the 24V line going to the starter solenoid. The switch is in the cab so I can reach it right away.
While cranking the engine with the key (simulating stuck relay) a flip of the switch kills the voltage to the starter solenoid and the starter stops.
