My plan is to bring the 109A3. I gutted the van box interior earlier this spring so the inside walls and floor frame are exposed but the exterior is pretty close to its original paint color and markings.
I'm bringing the rest of my winch kit to work on while I'm up there, I have the PTO...
A cousin of mine was deployed with the Marines to Somalia in 1993. He told me they had a M35A2 that they used for dump runs, he was one of a few in his unit who could drive it since most couldn't operate a manual transmission.
Before replacing the components, check the wires going into the connector that plugs into the component. On mine, a couple wires pulled out of the connector going into the turn signal switch. Its a good place for voltage to hop from one bare wire to another wire, which sounds like is happening...
I just cleared it with Mrs. Katahdin, anyone is welcome to layover over here in Scarborough on either leg of the trip. I'm thinking we can convoy to the rally Sat AM and head back Sun afternoon but I'm flexible.
The more the merrier. I'm on an old farm, there's plenty of room for parking and...
Alrighty, here are my measurements, keep in mind I'm using a cheap $20 digital caliper.
The "pot metal" shear pins from Memphis Equipment measure 7.80mm. These pins are very snug and appear to be the relative 'correct' size for both the PTO shaft and worm gear I have installed.
The aluminum...
I really like the Goodyear Wrangler Authorities (Walmart Exclusive) on my Jeep TJ. At $150 each it'll be easier on your wallet.

Edit: Ooops, too late, Sorry!
I've got space for parking and camping in 04074 if mass drivers want to go roughly halfway the night before, of course I should probably clear that with my wife first...
Welcome to the site! Yeah, I understand the rush to fix stuff before taking a long trip. I took my jeep TJ to the rally last year, but I'm feeling more confident with my 109 this year. :)
Since you're in the SouthWest (thinking drier climate) you might have better luck finding a rust-free 109 than us guys on the East Coast.
My 109 had a pretty healthy undercoating that masked the floor rot from underneath. When you get inside the box look for rotted floor wood, chances are...
That was the "dry-er" of the two brake housings. Here's the other one. After this experience, if you've never looked inside your winch I highly recommend it!
Gingeltaube- I'll get out the caliper tonight when I get home and take some measurements, thanks!
Yeah, I broke one of my captured nuts. I ended up just drilling a hole all the way through the channel and installing a longer bolt in that spot. This was before I knew how to replace them with a welder.
The spring-charged bolts and wire retainers were a pain (rust), I ended up replacing...
Good observation, shear pins I purchased recently from Memphis only fit the larger hole "good" gear, and that's a snug fit. The hole on the bead-blasted gear is either too small for the pins or the opening was marred. I have some shear pins incoming from Erik's in the next day or so that I'll...
Update to the thread.
I did end up using the second winch's worm gear. As you can see it was pretty nasty inside the second winch as well, but the worm gear cleaned up nicely. The gear grooves were in much better condition with only two small rust spots. I polished up the rust spots after...
I actually ordered the packard connector version from Erik's surplus, then tacked on another $60 worth of odds and ends to make shipping worth it. Next day I get an email the $35 for the solenoid was refunded because they're out of stock, but my other junk was on its way. aua
Saturn has these...
Its going on my 66' M109A3. I felt a little weird about opening it, its kind of like going back in time. Who knew there's still NIB truck parts from 1953?
This came today from Saturn Surplus, its an air horn solenoid. It came in a sealed foil pouch and the solenoid was wrapped in desiccant. This sucker has been completely unspoiled by oxygen and moisture.
I'd say the paint that was used on the solenoid back in 1953 is a spot on match to...
Untrained & novice mig welder here, but I've watched the experts on TV use .24 wire on thinner sheet metals. I welded in an 18 gauge patch this weekend outdoors with my Miller 211 using .24 and didn't have any trouble with burn through, the wind was a little breezy. I set my gas output to...
I should probably check my "saved photos" before I post these questions. Looking at this M105 bed, which appears to be in the same serial number range, there might be a third option of omitting the second character altogether.
Still curious what other SS members know or think. Thanks!
I'd like to order stencils for restoring my M105 to its original 1967 glory but I'm confused about the serial number. On the data plate the serial number's second character has a dash, but instead of a dash the Army painted on a "S"
Which second character should be painted on for a 1967...
