3M Paint Stripping wheels are the best non-sand blasting tool I've tried, but would be expensive the entire box. You'll want something fast to spin it, a typical drill is too slow. I use a pneumatic angle grinder.
Another way that might work better than the needle scaler is 40 grit sanding...
I know a retired coastie at the gun club who told me they picked up several deuces at a depot. It was memorable for him because one of the deuces lost its brakes going down a hill. I'll email him for more info.
The TM mentions both fiber and wire rope and has a table of the diameter strength on PDF page 36 (printed page is 33). The fiber rope the TM mentions is most likely manilla rope.
So the thickest fiber rope in the TM is 1.5 inches with a capacity of 9 tons. Hopefully the truck wouldn't be...
I took the side cover off the parts winch and the initial glimpse is encouraging. The metal is shiny and the bearings look a lot better than the other winch (I've ordered new bearings anyway). I can't spin the gears to inspect the rest if it because the brake is still on, and the drum lock...
Hmm... If I ignore the TM dis-assembly step-by-step instructions, I should be able to take the worm gear out of the parts winch without removing the drum, shouldn't I? At the very least I'll try to take the cover off it tonight to get a visual on the spare worm gear.
Darn it, I was just on the phone with George this morning regarding a gaskets package that already shipped. Do you know if he has new gears or used take outs?
I do have a parts winch that came with this one, I just wasn't looking forward to cracking it open yet.
Re water, I guess, the drain...
With 180 CFM you'll want a bigger sandblaster with a larger nozzle. The HF 110 is more like a 12-20CFM blaster and it'll take longer than the weekend to do the job.
LOL! I fixed your drain plug. Its funny what you can find with the search tool. (Mik sold me this winch)
I tried welding on a smaller bolt and the head snapped off with a breaker bar. Same thing happened with two nuts I welded on after that. It was the bolt that broke each time, not my...
Hmm... I just remembered I have some lapping compound on hand, I could try to smooth out the pitting to lessen the friction.
I also have another housing on hand that came with this one, I guess I should crack that one open to take a look. I was hoping to avoid the extra work and keep it all...
I've been cleaning up this worm gear with rust evaporator and bead blasting. Its still got some pitting but I'd like to put it back together and get some life out of it. What do you guys think?
I'm nearing the same point, good thread timing! I've got some rust to clean up on the worm gear. Its currently sitting in a bath of rust evaporator. Tomorrow I'll try glass beading it in my little blast cabinet.
An old lead hammer worked well for pounding out the worm gear shaft after heating...
Z, you should update your profile location so SS members can reach out to you if they're nearby. I believe you're in Florida, not Maine, correct me if I'm wrong. There's a lot of SS members in Florida.
