Occasionally, I've idly considered that it would be nice to have a 6.5 turbo and 4L80E transmission in my 1986 HMMWV. I believe that I've read that the 6.5 turbo more or less drops in, but the 4-speed transmission and newer model of transfer case require frame and/or support modifications.
Do...
Welcome to the club! Wow, that project will take a lot of work. If your truck came out of that big batch of USMC trucks that were auctioned off in Riverside, CA and Atlanta, GA back in 1999 or so, then my guess is that it's most likely a 1985-1987 truck.
Even with all of the dataplates removed...
RE: Crane
Do any of y'all know why LVS trailers are getting surplussed out without power units? Is there a rebuild program where the power units get refurbished and the trailers get replaced with new or different ones?
Aha! I've found a couple of threads on the topic:
HEMMT M977 Crane Swap Deuce Project
IT WORKS!!! M977 Crane with PICTURES!!!
I'll study these threads in detail when I get in to work later!
Now, if only I could have afforded Chris's M923A2 to hang a crane on...
Hey, everybody. I've been distracted by a home construction project for a quite a long time, and I've been ignoring this board and my trucks. My project and my move are still in progress, but things are winding down to where I can start to think about starting to think about trucks again...
I'm really sorry and angry to hear that your fine truck got tagged.
When I was living in Lake Forest, before I bought some land near Riverside, I kept my excess trucks at an RV storage lot over on Bake, a bit south of Portola.
The T-28 is my favorite single-engine aircraft. An ex-boss of mine has (had?) a T-28B, and I was lucky to be back-seat ballast on a number of flights before he moved up north. I had an opportunity to buy a flight in the back of a B-17G once, too. Naturally, that's my favorite multi-engine aircraft!
As I understand it, the lubricating oil used was castor oil. The combination of castor oil smoke and unburned oil spray from the exhaust would acquaint the pilot with the laxative properties of castor oil after extended flight.
This has made me contemplate how evil it would be to build...
RE: Fontana Yard
It's mostly 5-ton and HMMWV stuff. I don't recall seeing any Jeep or M37 stuff. But that's no excuse to not go just for the fun of it, though! ;)
http://www.mcmaster.com/ has those, too, if you don't feel like trekking to the nearest NAPA. Search for "shockmount", and they should show up on the first page. You may need to guess about the rubber stiffness, though.
What if you added a hand hydraulic pump as a backup in case the motor dies, and you need to do something like operating the outriggers or stowing the crane?
Probably just CYA boilerplate. To play it safe, I would recommend against breaking the gauges and then licking the broken glass, and/or keeping the gauges in your front pocket for periods in excess of 25 years.
RE: out
They do the pulse thing that you mentioned. I think the pulse frequency is somewhere in the several kilohertz range.
Mine make a high-pitched whine when they're operating, and the whine changes pitch depending on the amount of light. You might not be able to hear the whine if you...
Re: RE: M923/M543A2 Axle Swap
DD directed me to email Joe Shannon to ask him what he did with his M62. Joe responded (and gave me permission to quote him):
I've attached the pictures that he sent me.
This isn't what I want to do... I want to have all four rear brake drums firmly locked up...
