Ryan - I like your thoughts, but why not Detroit Lockers on all three axles, Overson hubs on the front axle and Overson hubs with double splined shafts on one rear axle (your choice of axle) for maximum on road snow belt performance, decent off road use as well? Not that I have that much pocket...
Since the fan motor will only stick out about 1/2" past the grille, why not grab a little bar stock and make up some extensions to move the grille about 1-1/2 outboard? Properly done and squared up, it wouldn't look very much different than original, certainly better than a 5" diameter hole in...
Agreed. You need TWO batteries of approximately same age/condition in order to properly charge both batteries in a series connection. Don't know what you pay for batteries, I can get NEW Interstate U6TLs for $105 each, others have got the same for as low as $95, blems; when available...
Ernie - I'd like some specifics about your 24V cooling fan. Much as I'd like to remove my mechancal fan for MPG improvement/noise reduction, I think the combination of no fan and Arctic grille cover may get me running too hot. The electric fan and Arctic grille cover sounds like a very "doable"...
RE: Re: Heating oil
Home Heating Oil is NOT "just a highly refined diesel oil". I have lived in homes heated with HHO for most of 30 years. HHO comes in two grades, fuel oil #2 (basically the same as #2 diesel) and fuel oil #1 (basically the same as #1 diesel), probably without a few of the...
RE: oil
Don't know if I'd be too excited about running waste engine oil directly from the sump to the tank. WEO, especially diesel WEO, has s lot of soot in it (unless you are running a high efficiency bypass oil filter). The soot (unburned carbon) particles run in the 20-60 micron range, big...
The "recirculating electric coolant heater" I meant was one of those 110V jobbies with a heater and pump built into one unit. You plumb it up through your heater hoses & the pump circulates heated coolant through the engine. Deuces are definately over cooled, especially in the winter time. An...
When I started this project I thought I could get by with just one elbow and the connector, which was pretty reasonable. It wasn't until I got the rusted out pipe cut off that I could see pinholes in the back side of the elbow, since I had already gone that far I just bought another elbow and...
I'd be interested in 10 11:00-20/12:00-20 tires, aggresive tread pattern, radials prefered, NOT NDCCs, 46" or so tall, to fit my stock rims. Don't want to screw with the expense of custom rims.
I did it the hard, but maybe cheaper way, I bought a couple of 3-1/2" OD by 3-1/2" ID elbows, a 3-1/2" ID x 3-1/2" ID connector and a fistfull of 3-1/2" ID muffler clamps. The elbows were about $30 each, the connector was about $12 and the clamps were a couple of bucks each.
First step was to...
RE: none
Forget the WVO, too much effort to convert unless you live in a semi-tropical climate, which WVA is NOT!. Learn to make biodiesel, seasonally adjust by mixing #2D or #1D depending on ambient temperature, and run that genset, tractor or dozer/car/truck or whatever just like it was...
You definately have a drain someplace. I leave my Deuce parked with the light switch in "Stop Light On" ALL the time, never have had a problem. Maybe a bad alternator diode, maybe something else. Try disconnecting one wire at a time until you find the drain. A VOM is a great help here...
RE: egt spread...
Ernie - I was not being critical of your remarks. Actually, in my search for a pyro, I found several advertised as "pre-turbo" and several advertised as "post-turbo". I am just wondering what is the value/use of a post turbo pyrometer.
RE: egt spread...
And of what significance, if any, is a pyro read after the turbo? Only thing I can think of is to see if your turbo has cooled enough to shut down the engine; if you idle the engine for about 5 minutes after a run it is assumed to be cooled off enough anyhow so why spend an...
RE: washer
Surprisingly, I got a usable fibre washer at the second auto parts store I tried. I expected the first place, a Carquest shop, would have them as they are a larger store and seem to carry a fair amount of HD truck stuff but nope, no such luck. Then I went to a PartsPlus store, a...
I changed the oil filters on my Deuce today with a fresh set of Baldwin filters. The base gaskets were a perfect fit, but the red fiber washer which goes under the head of the hollow cannister hold down bolt wasn't even close, so I had to reuse the old washers. Filled her up with fresh oil...
The NAPA/Interstate number for a Deuce battery is U6TL. The local Napa store wanted $179.95, I got one from an Interstate dealer (green case) for $105.95.
Bradmachine - to try to answer your questions directly:
1. Per the TMs, max engine speed under load (i.e., when driving) for a LDT465 should not exceed 2600-2650 rpm. Your engine govener should limit rpms to that level, if not, get it adjusted. Exceed those speeds only if you have a very fat...
RE: oil filter
Not too shabby an idea, you'd just have to know which model Luber-finer you are dealing with, a some models are full flow units and some are bypass units, and then figure out what filters are available for that unit. Problem is trying to find a HD truck boneyard around here...
