Thanks!! That is really useful information. That would also increase the loading on the outer wheel bearing; not good. So far it looks like I have to find a couple of real M416 wheels.
That's my frustration. I am far enough away that I can't attend events like that given that spare moments are few and far between, and there are no such MV shows near me.
Also, not too many junk yards here. The few that exist all scrap right away so if you are not after a front clip from an...
Thanks, it will be good if the measurements are posted for the backspacing and inner hub diameter.
Unfortunately, military parts are not common in this neck of the woods, and the cost and shipping of mail order would not make sense if I can get common steel wheels from a junkyard.
My M416 has original NDT tires in really good shape considering their age. I have some 16" BFG take-offs from my wife's Suburban - plenty of thread. I would like to use the civilian 16" tires for every day use, and save the NDTs for special occasions. For obvious reasons, I don't want to...
I was not expecting too much, but I found it to operate very well. It seemed quite powerful. It is packaged with all the little control bells and whistles to be a complete package. I also did not expect the fairlead.
Given the surprising performance and getting it on sale, I thik I made out...
I ended up going a slightly different route. Having only a given amount of money to spend, and having received a couple of Harbor Freight coupons, I purchased their one-ton engine hoist cherry picker and 2,000 lb ATV winch. I need the flexibility of a cherry picker and could not afford buying...
Update: the non-profit decided that they are not ready for a Deuce. The entire thing is on hold for the foreseeable future. What a shame, but I am sure that in a year or so they will reconsider. Thanks to everyone who offered vehicles or help. I'll let you all know should the situation change.
Apparently the issue of whether one locking hub is enough on the front, or if you need two, is like asking 'which wax is best?' on a Corvette forum. Everyone has their own opinion. My own questioning is not because I particularly care if anyone uses one or two. My question was prompted after...
Over 20 years ago I bought a brand new Chevy 4x4. I was concerned by the way the front axle disconnected - the passenger's side axle disconnected by a dog clutch. I visualized all that stuff spinning around inside, and anticipated trouble.
I now have a quarter million miles on that axle...
I am not sure about that. With the transfer case in neutral and one hub disconnected, the ring and pinion will not rotate (neglecting some nominal movement due to friction).
The GM and Jeep 4WD systems I described only disconnect one axle. Disengaging a dog clutch on one axle is the same as...
I understand the neeed for a flex joint but you lose the visual effect. If you are going to go with a flex joint, why bother at all? Just bolt on and section the box off of a box truck.
I think the design should maintain an unbroken flank. It's not that long, and mounting the body on resilient...
It might work just fine.
Personally, I am not a fan of bedliner products. I do not like the appearance or the texture. Way too thick and 'plastic', nor the idea of a coating that can not be easily removed. To me, they look out of place on a regular old pickup truck. They look absolutely...
My DD Jeep and Chevy 4x4 have one split axle up front. Disconnecting that one axle shaft lets the front axle freewheel when the transfer case is in 2WD.
And, per this thread, to unlock the forward rear axle, you only need one lockout hub.
So, why not only 1 lockout hub on the front, as well...
Wow, he got a good deal. Was just corresponding that I probably should go ahead with yours anyway. NP, fair is fair. I am still working through the various issues with the not-for-profit.
I must say that I have been blown away with the generosity, fellowship and good intent from this Forum. There are many possibilities at this point. The first thing I need to chase down is whether indeed they are entitled to free surplus directly from our Uncle. They might well qualify, but I...
