I thought he "blew" his head gaskets ? I didn't read where he has had continuous blowby. In that case I agree with your uncle. You need to remember that the MultiFuel has one of the highest compression ratios of any diesel engine out there. That means any problem with piston rings or valve...
I've used that trick before. The only problem we had was the head ripped out several studs when it cut loose. If you do decide to use this method, make sure the nuts are loosened to the same degree on each stud. Seems we had a couple odd nuts tighter than the other ones. These two studs took the...
I'd pull them out and check them, then clean the threads up real good. Use a wire wheel to get into the threads. Or better yet replace them with "ARP" studs. Also use a "counter-sink" bit to cut an edge on the bolt holes. This cuts back the deck that gets raised when you use studs. A single...
You can use a "Loctite" or "FelPro" gasket sealer designed for heads. I've had good luck with the "Loctite" product. Though you shouldn't really need it if the block deck is finished nice and the heads are properly flat.
Wow ! That is so cool that you have read "Lucifer's Hammer" !!!
That book had a profound effect on my life. I actually bought an "IHC Travelall" after reading it.
It started me on my book collecting too. As of now I have over 18,000 books. Most are technical manuals of one sort or another. I...
I like that statement of yours ( when the lights go out, press the on button on your computer 10,000 times and see if it helps) Thats priceless !!!!
I've said for decades now, that you need physical copies of all your important documents and books.
That is why I have hundreds of military...
What he said 👆 .
Also remember the MultiFuel is running 22:1 compression. That in itself is enough to blow head gaskets that are not properly held down.
The compression range of a normal Diesel engine is between 14:1 to 22:1 . That means the MultiFuel engine is at the max limit of compression...
Yes, there are 4 ring (old style) and 3 ring (new style) pistons. Do not mix them though ! They have different weights and would put your engine out of balance.
If the pistons had not already been rejected I would have reused them. The pitting didn't go near the edges that I could see, and the lands I assume were Ok. As far as loosing it's hardness, Aluminum is a funny metal. It's not like steel which if overheated can lose its hardness. It's more a...
The "C" turbo and "D" turbo have almost identical specs. They are both "low" pressure turbos barely making 8-15 PSI. They were only used to help meet the EPA emissions standards. The original "Non" turbo Multifuels could really "roll coal" . The turbos helped clean them up a bit.
Now to really...
I really don't see any advantage to going this route. My "AirForce" deuce with the dual master cylinder and dual airpacks works great. The master cylinder is still available for purchase and the airpacks are still rebuildable. Now you can just keep the dual master cylinder and go with a more...
No one manufactured any "special" parts for the Spicer 3052/3053 transmission. You can send the gears out yourself and have them "Nitrided" and or "Cryo" dipped. If you do go this route, I would buy new gears to do it to.
I take it there is an "adversarial" attitude towards the State Patrol on the East Coast then.
Out here in Washington State we look open the State Patrol as a good thing to have around. They can be a pain when your caught speeding on the Freeway ! , but in general we like them. They do provide...
The main problem with a "Hydro-Vac" is the lack of vacuum in a Diesel engine. Yes you can add a "vacuum" compressor as Chevrolet did on the early diesel engined vehicles, but it is expensive and not nearly as efficient as the Deuces "airpaks" are. Plus your now trying to add this vacuum pump to...
There are several factors you need to consider before discounting using valve seals. One, the military didn't use them as the life expectancy for the deuce was considered in weeks not years. Let's face it, the Deuce was a "throw-away" truck. Anyone can see this by the "Spartan" way it was...
