    I've had several units with the nut under the brass flange nut. I think they did that to make sure the brass flange nut doesn't unscrew.

    You should but to be honest, I usually reuse the old washers because they get stuck in the hole and I can't get them out easily.

    MEP 002A generator exciter issue.

    If it's making power while in the start position, the problem most likely will be found in the distribution box. Their is a control board inside (I believe it's A2 or A3)that is mounted on the backside of the distribution box. There are several capacitors on the board that maybe the problem.

    The alternator is upside down, there should be some clearance between the alternator and starter. After you flip it over, it will sit higher and be out of the way.
