If you're using a non-separately derived system (see Speddmon's post #25 and #32 (with the very helpful pictures)), then you need to break the connection between L[whatever] - the neutral connection point on the gen head windings and the frame ground and connect the frame ground to your meter...
My MEP-002A will start one of my heat pumps while the other one is running (in AC mode). It's not happy about it, and I won't be doing it in practice, but it was impressive to see how much surge capacity the little beast could manage.
I don't remember the equivalent tonnage of the units...
The truth about MEP-002A/003A noise:
Yes, they are. All of that 'wear hearing protection' stencilwork isn't for decoration. But:
1. it beats the snot out of the silence of your house with no electricity
2. It's an 1800 RPM air cooled diesel with quite a bit of fan noise - not an unpleasant...
Just a post to agree with Ike on this: it's just like the Army says: Fight like you train, and train like you fight. Running the machine monthly is better than nothing, but better still is to run it under a load that simulates your actual power outage environment. A light (30%) load is better...
The octane ratings are less of a concern than you might fear. The US military standardized on US SAE Research Octane Number through all of WWII, and I believe that's very close to the EC rating system standard. You should be fine with 95 RON fuel. Miscibility with the two-stroke oil should be...
Well, it's a diesel, so your options are down to either 1) running a direct contact tach, 2) picking AC off of the magneto leads for the DC power system and using that , or 3) an optical tach shining on the fan or flywheel.
The traditional method is with a sanding block with 600 or 400 grit wet or dry paper. You just wet sand the area until you go through a layer and have a peek at what is underneath. As long as you're gentle you'll get a good even removal of the newer layers with minimum damage to the older...
Interesting. The 90-100 octane tag suggests that it was expected to run off of avgas, which, along with the 400Hz and two stroke (lightweight) nature of the beast suggests that you're right about it being an aircraft-mounted APU.
What I found most interesting about it (other than that wacky...
Looks like a great set. I'm debating about getting one for my 'portable power' needs. My MEP-002A is a wonderful beast that will run both heat pumps in my house, but even the addition of casters would not make its 1000 lb bulk easy to move around...
Yes, the IP is fidgety, but pretty simple as they go. If you can rebuild an automotive carburetor then you can definitely do this. There's detailed information linked in the wiki and the manuals section on the IP. If it's just stuck and binding you may get away without needing parts if you're...
I'm thinking it was overtightened bolts. I've seen similar failures on flexplate/flywheel mountings to car or truck engine crankshafts. Once the first one let go the others were under more stress. If they were all overtightened to the same torque, crack propagation is a definite possibility.
The gaskets are multi-use. My strainer had a perfectly good gasket on it.
READ THE OPERATOR MANUAL. Idling the engine will kill the voltage regulator. You should probably be careful to turn the engine through by hand and verify that it is not stuck/binding (remove plug on blower grille, use...
another long post
Sure - no free lunches. F always equals MA, which means that if you needed 10 KW-seconds to start your well pump, an MEP-002A will be running at full output for twenty seconds to come back up to speed after expending that energy. The good news is that the actual motor start...
An additional item for pre-purchase inspection:
All units: Can the engine be turned through gently by hand?
Gasser units have a rope sheave. It doesn't get much easier than that.
MEP-002A/003A: Remove plastic plug from center of blower grille and stick a socket in (I forget what size)...
Peace! I was just repeating you for emphasis. Lots of people skim and search these threads. I knew what you were saying. I just wanted to spell it out clearly and address the common complaint about doing it right (the whine about cost).
Hm. As I read my copy of the 2008 NEC (sec. 250.35), it looks to me like the generator should not be separately grounded, but instead should be grounded to the service ground of the house. This would be to avoid a ground loop through a grounding conductor between the generator set ground and...
I asked advice about asbestos brake dust of my OSH doctor back when I worked in a lab and got semiannual checkups.
His reply was that the only way asbestos was dangerous was if you inhaled it. His advice was also to wet it down. He said that non-friable asbestos (that is, where the fibers...
The engine would not necessarily be working harder to spin a heavier flywheel at a constant speed. Why not? Simple: objects in motion tend to want to remain in motion. The only reason a heavy flywheel would present more 'drag' to a generator once at 1800 RPM would be because it had more...
Given that the engine is exactly twice as big as the 002a engine, I think twice the 002a idle fuel consumption is a good initial guess.
If I were serious about getting more surge capacity in the generator, I'd probably look at hanging a heavy flywheel off the blower end instead...
