Mine has about 1100 hours on the Hobbs meter now, had about 1000 when I got it. It has good compression and everything important works to specification, although the Hz meter is sometimes flaky. The only actual problem it has is that the aux pump float switch in the tank doesn't work. I...
Let's see, in order of preference:
1. Put it in high gear and set the handbrake. This works pretty well up to 100 lb-ft or so if your handbrake works well. Low gear gives the engine more torque multiplication to the brake, so doesn't work as well.
2. Something stuck in the flywheel or...
Very interesting. I would like to see some numbers. Alcohols have less energy per pound combusted, which equals less flight time/payload/performance per tank full. Probably OK in some applications (touch and go training/familiarity flights over CONUS) but probably not viable for deployment...
Yeah, mine's due for its first oil change after the two-day outage (already had some hours on it from test runs over the last year). I figure I'll get it good and hot on the new load bank I'm cooking up (involving retired baseboard heaters), do my droop test, and then do the change.
I should...
And, apropos of the stuff in this thread, when you run it, be sure to run the carburetor dry or drain after use. Likewise, if you have any doubts about rubber fuel line, replace it all with current materials.
I've always sort of jonesed for an XM-211 of some kind, but I have to say that the excavator is about the coolest thing I've ever seen on the family tree. Good on you for saving it, especially given that it's probably the last one in the world. You could park it beside CGarbee's XM-708 as part...
It's typical US Army style logic: If it says 5KW output, that means 5000.00 watts all the time it's running under any deployable circumstances or the manufacturer failed to meet the terms of contract. Likewise the % load gauge, which is calibrated assuming a power factor of 0.8, which means...
The storm blew through here at about 21:30 Friday. Power went out with the first 60 MPH gust when a red oak took the line down on our road. It was cool enough that evening that we didn't bother with a generator until the next morning.
The MEP-002A is still temporarily installed on a corner of...
Maybe they were running it on battery only and the alternator was just there to give the belt something to wrap around? I've seen things like that on other occasional-use farm trucks.
OTOH, it got parked for some reason. Charging system problems would qualify.
One thing I've heard from almost everybody about the standard deuce is that faster is just not a good idea. The truck is basically maxed out at the 5x mph it is governed to. The engine does not respond well to more RPM, the brakes do not cope with more kinetic energy well, and then there's the...
Got the emails last night. Knew immediately what had happened. Purposefully neglected to log onto the site last night.
And in the 'every cloud has a silver lining' column, we had a site-wide tour of my department (IT) today. I was walking people through the computer room. I used the hack of...
I got mine mail order, but they're available from some local vendors, depending on your definition of 'local.' Google shopping says that Sam's or Radio Shack may stock them. It's the second most useful electrical measuring tool I have after my Fluke DMM.
Yeah, the goofy logo and the lame pseudo-battleship armor on the box but nothing on the cab/engine is suggestive of bad movie. I wonder if it really has CTIS or just the covers on the wheels...
I'm guessing mkcoen is referring to M2 burners, which are not much beloved (can't watch YT at work). They are sort of like the world's biggest Coleman stove, require some care for proper operation, and can cause excitement or injury if not operated properly. There are people here who have...
I got mine home on my >2000# rated single-axle utility trailer (Cabell's cousin used a fork loader to get it on the trailer). Got it off the trailer by setting both brakes on the quad and skidding it down the trailer ramp with the quad's winch. I was worried about how to get it to its...
Yes, that's the business end of a Pratt&Whitney J58 doing its thing: making enough power to push 172,000 lb of JP-7 and titanium faster than mach 3. I have a family connection to the development of that engine, so it's a family pride thing to have it as an avatar.
How does this relate to an...
