Certainly sounds like a short. Where did you see the sparks coming from? Have you taken the top covers off and inspected the wiring?

If you ever want to upgrade the units you might consider one of the inverter based ACs. I can easily start mine with the 831. Its a 14kbtu 120v unit. Really energy efficient too! I run it in the summer time off the solar setup. It was a bit over $500.

Have you checked to make sure phase 1 of each generator match each other as well as phases 2 and 3?

I verified mine would run with the batteries disconnected on AC power. Also verified in the manual that it indicates it will run on AC input power without batteries but it will not run on DC input power without batteries.

If I'm able to get out to the shop today I'll test mine and let you know. I'm pretty sure they will not run on the DC cord without the batteries but I don't know if I've ever tried it with the AC cord.
