On the rusty unit I would throw some batteries in it and see if it spins over and if the fuel pumps turn on. If so, I would take the time to clean the tank, replace all the filters, new oil and try and start it. Bad fuel tanks and gages are common from sitting around. Might also want to check...
Well they do make replacement links but it's back to stock for this one from a donor truck in the boneyard. I keep all my trucks stock as well the ones I work on, as said before makes things easier to fix.
Give that man a cigar! it was the fusible link for the 12v block feed. It would show 12v but carry no amperage. I have never had a fusible link go before, I thought there would be some sign of it being burnt so I assumed it was good since I had voltage. Thank you very much.

Trying to help out the local forestry get their M1008 back up for fire season. Driver said when he went to start it during the glow plug cycle he heard a snap or pop bang etc and everything went dead. I went over and checked the battery voltage 26+ volts, same at the glowplug relay, have 13+...
I am repairing a few units just received by the forest service. The oil pressure, voltmeter and water temp gages are fluttering back and forth, not working at all or sometimes working. I have not taken the gage panel off yet but looking for advice on the problem such as a ground for the gage...
The linkage at the actuator was out of adjustment. I backed the speed control off to about 40Hz then lengthened the rod approx 3/8 to 1/2 inch and re-adjusted the speed control right up to 60-61Hz. Did notice when the air compressor kicks on it dips down to 57Hz for half a second or so then...
I have swapped out several pumps and I leave the lines attached to the pump when I remove it, unhooking them from the injectors only. Once out I set it on a clean flat surface and then remove the lines and pull the pump away from the cluster of lines. This leaves them in position to re-install...
That is a nice looking set and might be a ss record for long distance recovery. I like the fuel tank but when it's full it must be quite a chore to get the trailer lifted up on the hitch with that extra weight.
I just looked it up in the TM, a M1031 cab-chassis weighs 5250lbs, a M1010 ambulance weighs 7370lbs, so the box weighs 2,120lbs. Of course the ambulance has a spotlight on the roof and a air conditioning pump extra so you are atleast looking at 2,000lbs.
I removed one of these from my M1010, I can tell you it is way too heavy. But go ahead and give it a try, you'll have reverse arched springs as a bonus.
I agree with DocWatson, your IP is worn out if it won't hot start. By not replacing it you are increasing the wear on the starter and glow plug system.
I know from personal experience that an S-250 will not fit in a 3/4 ton cargo trailer. I have seen them mounted on 3/4 ton gen trailers though. I ended up storing mine in a M105 trailer.
