If you smell diesel in the oil it proably came from the FDC,its on top of the injector pump.Do a search on here their are plenty of write ups on bypassing the FDC.
I found this if you need to bypass.
First off I would check the oil to see if their is any diesel in the oil,it might be thinning the oil.What is the temp. gauge say when the floor is hot.

If your FDC is intact I would leave it alone unless it is leaking in the oil.If the metal cover is over the fuel screw dont turn it down its good what ever you burn with your foot to the floor.Unless someone put the metal cover back on after turning the fuel up.If the wire is in the bolt heads...
Are you saying the one lever that says lock doesnt move at all up or down a little.You have to hold the lock lever to turn the light lever at the same time.
