Any time you remove the the pan it is a good idea replace the oil pump if it has any age on it. Since you do not know the history I would replace it.
As far a synthetic oil in an old diesel, my personal opinion is that it is a waste of money. Rottela or Deco 15w-40 is all I have ever used.
In a stock system.
The front battery supplies power to almost all the truck (12v items)
The rear battery is connected in series to the front battery and supplies 24v (12v+12v) to the starter and glow plug system.
You didn't say which battery is only supplying 10v. The dead cell may be taxing...
Looking at the parts TM 9-2815-210-34P, figure 20, it looks like there is a gasket for the long pickup tubes, item #35. The short tube looks like a gasket #19, o-ring #34 and a gasket #28

No pickup tube will cause a no drive situation. Think of all the practice of dropping the pan you will have. ;-)
You may want to think about adding a drain plug while you have the pan off.

I have heard that some people will use a fuel tank from an Chevy S-10 Blazer. It is suppose to be a near match. Maybe some of the M37 owners will chime in.
