    Replacing the rear main seal and many questions

    Any time you remove the the pan it is a good idea replace the oil pump if it has any age on it. Since you do not know the history I would replace it. As far a synthetic oil in an old diesel, my personal opinion is that it is a waste of money. Rottela or Deco 15w-40 is all I have ever used.

    In a stock system. The front battery supplies power to almost all the truck (12v items) The rear battery is connected in series to the front battery and supplies 24v (12v+12v) to the starter and glow plug system. You didn't say which battery is only supplying 10v. The dead cell may be taxing...

    Is your engine in or out of the truck? Have you looked at the TM 9-2320-289-34 manual, chapter 3-34? It covers the replacement of the seal.

    Looking at the parts TM 9-2815-210-34P, figure 20, it looks like there is a gasket for the long pickup tubes, item #35. The short tube looks like a gasket #19, o-ring #34 and a gasket #28

    No pickup tube will cause a no drive situation. Think of all the practice of dropping the pan you will have. ;-) You may want to think about adding a drain plug while you have the pan off.
