That is an early style front crossmember, my A1 is like that. A1s are early to mid 60s. I'm not sure when they changed, but most A2's have a channel laying horizontal instead of that vertical square tube. Flat channel is weaker and bend and break sometimes.
You can add an air horn and solenoid easily enough. The stock ones are high pitched though. Older 5 tons, 800 series sound better IMO. I'd like to have a working electric horn for my A1. I've never heard one.
Search up my posts on M35A1s and you'll find indicators like windshield washer knob...
I don't think those are orig data plates, they're refurb plates.

Rusty, you've rebuilt a lot of stuff. I've always wondered how many miles are on my 70. Judging by the lack of wear on the pinion flange from the seal, and what I found inside the broken transmission which looked really good except for being broken, I think this is a low mileage truck, but the...
Changing front pinion seal. First I thought I had water in the diff because of the thick chunks and milky look but then when I pulled the seal I found white lithium grease behind it. I'm still gonna drain a little oil and see how it looks. Spring had come off the old seal and gone inward. Old...
I have a '66 with civvy rigged engine mounts that hits too. I'll look and think next time I'm out around my deuces.
My suspect is the front engine crossmember. My '62 has a vertically oriented rectangular tube and the later ones have a channel that is horizontal or laid flat, and they bend and...
Here's another A1, they look similar. Couple other guys in that thread have A1s too, Scooter and stb64.

Thanks for the pics! An M35A1 surviving mostly in A1 configuration with A1 data plates seems to be quite rare. Either they were converted to A2, or surplused out and run into the ground (like mine) or scrapped. Looks like yours has an A2 engine and exhaust. does it still have the foot or stomp...
Thanks Rusty. I'll shoot it with temp gun next time. I know the others were comfortably warm, but the rear I could only touch for a couple seconds. Didn't smell hot or anything though so probably not real hot.
Passenger inner door handle (and latch bolt) was sticking. Removed handle, drilled a pinhole in it (too lazy to remove) and shot some oil in it and around the bolt, freed up. Installed Those Military Guys locking outer door handle as well.
