Update for this thread, our mechanic looked it over, the county purchased the truck for $5k, they were asking $10k, but the drive shafts were both slightly bent ( forklift unloading? ), so he talked them into knocking $5k off. He hauled it back on a trailer, pulled the drive shafts off and sent...
Update, we got five LMTV wheels / rims new for $125 each, the "tan" rims were wrong, thanks for the help, they had some with "Black" rims that were right.
My bad, didn't know those totes were baffled, the ones I've seen on two converted fire deuces down here were not baffled.
The 500-gallon tank with the two hose reels was given to us, it was originally mounted on a trailer used by a local chemical plant.
The larger "black" tank was custom made...
Proabably a good thing you removed one of the 600-gallon totes. Those are not baffled and are known to be "top heavy".
We use low-profile plastic baffled tanks on our two A2's.
This picture was posted on here a while back of a roll-over of a fire deuce with two of those totes on it, I think...
The Texas forest service has a "newer" program where the trucks are given to the depts and they are free to sell them after a year or so....
If the trucks are old forest service trucks its probable they are under the old program where the trucks still belong to the govt.
however a lot of depts...
There are two texas forest service programs, one where the fed govt owns the trucks, the other where they give you the trucks.
Check if the dept bought the trucks, or got them through the forest service. You could also get the license plate number and see who its registered to, the forest...
Like the above posters stated, it depends on how you use your Deuce. Ours are used for Firefighting and once we came back from a 24+ hour long grass fire response with three flat tires. ( all on different rear axles )
When we decided to upgrade the "crappy" 9.00 x 20 NDT tires, we had a big...
We use Optima Blue top Gel Cell batteries in both of our M35A2's for over 5 years now. We use the threaded post model.
We were having horrible problems with the original military batteries, then the commercial replacement batteries we purchased. We were told the batteries were failing because...
Thanks,
DRMO yard got a bunch in, guess it's worth it for the tires though. Rims look easy enough to take apart.
They also got a bunch of 14.00 x 20's on rims as well.
Good Luck,
we went through this in 2010: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?60305-Engine-swap-fun
On a side note, one of our mechanics used to work for a dredging company, he said once he was called to a tug boat that had an "engine noise", in the engine room he found the engine...
Thanks for the information and advice everyone,
bikeman,
We are looking towards the future, we know our M35A2's will not last forever, we had thought about getting one or two M35A3's and putting them in storage for when we started retiring the A2's, but then we saw these. We've also looked at...
Thanks for the info, one of our two mechanics used to be a field mechanic for Stewart and Stevenson for several years before he worked for the county, but I haven't seen him to get his opnion yet.
Must be why these are showing up now, these are at the DRMO yard available to govt agencies only...
Just an update, we finally changed out the tires on our other M35, this truck has the 12.5 x 20 Continentals all the way around, with the Boyce Equipment one-piece rims on the front, original rims in back. I really feel the difference driving, and it handles soft mud so much better.
See picture...
We run two converted M35A2 as brush trucks. The other day at the DRMO yard I saw that they are starting to get some LMTV's in...
They have a nice tan STEWART & STEVENSON model with 16000 miles on it, great shape, great tires, including the spare.
What kind of engine do these have...
The machine will be used for the County equipment as well. We didn't have to foot the whole bill. Our VFD mechanic is also the local County equipment mechanic and they do tires all the time.
Supposedly these machines cost over $10k brand new, this one had a sticker that said the govt valued it...
We get these tires like new from Gensco in Houston for $125 each, 12.5 x 20 made by Continetal in Austria.
Never had a bead problem yet, we don't run the lock ring rims on the front, we use a one-piece rim from Boyce Equipment.
Our Mechanic picked up this tire machine at the DRMO/Texas Facilities Commission Yard in San Antonio for $1,000, it looks brand new.
Anyway, he says it a breeze to mount tires on the M35/A1/A2 rims with this machine, he puts the tire with tube in it on the rim, sets the lock ring against the...
